Managing emotional labour: the importance of organisational support for managing police officers in England and Italy

Yvonne Brunetto et al.

Summary: This study empirically examines the impact of perceived organisational support (POS) on employees' well-being and engagement. Using a Conservation of Resources (COR) theoretical framework, the findings suggest that low POS leads to increased stress, lower resilience, and reduced job engagement among police officers. The study highlights the importance of organisational support in managing emotional labour and protecting employee well-being.

Reciprocal relations between emotional exhaustion and episode-specific emotional labour: An experience-sampling study

Hadar Nesher Shoshan et al.

Summary: This study examines the dynamic reciprocal relations between service employees' exhaustion and surface acting, as well as deep acting. The findings suggest that exhaustion is an antecedent of surface acting and that surface acting directly leads to subsequent exhaustion. These findings underscore the importance of integrating exhaustion and surface acting into the emotional labor literature, as well as studying the direct well-being costs of surface acting in single service episodes.

(Infra)structural Discontinuity: Capital, Labour, and Technological Change

Matthew Cole

Summary: This paper draws on neo-Schumpeterian and regulation theory to examine the discontinuities between the AI era and the platform era. It argues that growth regimes are not reliable indicators of new paradigms, and platformisation entails distinct institutional and social regulation changes. Economic geography and associated literatures have not sufficiently addressed the clusters of technological and institutional changes behind this shift.

Academic labour as professional service work? A psychosocial analysis of emotion in lecturer-student relations under marketization

Elizabeth Nixon et al.

Summary: This article conducts a psychosocial analysis of academics' experiences of interacting with students in a marketized higher education context. It illustrates how institutional imperatives align with lecturers' internalized professional duty, while also heightening emotional responses due to changing power differentials brought by marketization. The unintended consequence of organizational imperatives to 'corporately care' for students is found to generate acute ambivalence and intensify psychological demands on teaching staff significantly.

Labour, Efficiency, Critique: writing the plantation into the technological present-future

Stefan Ouma et al.

Summary: This commentary calls for critical labour scholars to focus more on the 'thrust of efficiency' in their work, particularly by analyzing it in terms of historical lineage and geographical scope. Centering efficiency in critical labour studies requires three scholarly moves, with particular relevance for labour geography. It is important to address coloniality/labour, digital Taylorism, and the politics of economic geographies to provide a comprehensive critique of efficiency in economic geography and beyond.

Humanly Extended Automation or the Future of Work Seen through Amazon Patents

Alessandro Delfanti et al.

Summary: Amazon's patents reveal a future where workers are not completely replaced by machines, but instead machines increase surveillance and work rhythms for workers and incorporate their activities to rationalize the labor process in a more pervasive digital form. This reinforces Amazon's power in the digital workplace, enabling workers to act and sense on behalf of machinery.
