Global burden of bacterial antimicrobial resistance in 2019: a systematic analysis

Christopher J. L. Murray et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant threat to global human health, and this study provides the most comprehensive estimates of AMR burden to date. By estimating deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) associated with bacterial AMR in 204 countries and territories in 2019, the study highlights the impact of resistance and the leading pathogen-drug combinations contributing to it.

Antibiotic prescriptions in the context of suspected bacterial respiratory tract superinfections in the COVID-19 era: a retrospective quantitative analysis of antibiotic consumption and identification of antibiotic prescription drivers

J. Van Laethem et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed antibiotic consumption in COVID-19 patients in a Belgian university hospital and identified drivers associated with antibiotic prescribing, such as fever on admission and lower SpO(2)/FiO(2) ratio. Specific patient characteristics, like underlying pulmonary disease, and hospital stay duration were also linked to antibiotic prescription. The findings aim to guide antimicrobial stewardship programs in optimizing interventions in COVID-19 wards.

Antibiotic Use in Suspected and Confirmed COVID-19 Patients Admitted to Health Facilities in Sierra Leone in 2020-2021: Practice Does Not Follow Policy

Ibrahim Franklyn Kamara et al.

Summary: Inappropriate use of antibiotics is prevalent among suspected and confirmed COVID-19 patients in Sierra Leone, leading to increased antimicrobial resistance. There is a need for training healthcare providers, strengthening antimicrobial stewardship programs, and improving microbiological laboratory capacity.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in COVID-19 patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis (November 2019-June 2021)

Ruwandi M. Kariyawasam et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the prevalence and types of resistant co-infecting organisms in COVID-19 patients. The results showed a high prevalence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in these patients, with variations across different hospitals and geographic settings. This finding is crucial for improving global surveillance programs, infection prevention and control measures, and antimicrobial stewardship programs.

Decrease in community antibiotic consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic, EU/EEA, 2020

Liselotte Diaz Hogberg et al.

Summary: A large-scale study suggests that individuals aged 60 and above, as well as high-risk individuals aged between 60 and 69, should be prioritized for COVID-19 vaccination, as the vaccines are found to be more effective in protecting these two groups.

Key considerations on the potential impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on antimicrobial resistance research and surveillance

Jesus Rodriguez-Bano et al.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, inappropriate and excessive antibiotic prescribing in SARS-CoV-2 patients has highlighted weaknesses in antimicrobial stewardship programs, with a deprioritization of surveillance and containment of antimicrobial resistance. Long-term global surveillance, implementation research, and internationally coordinated AMR research are necessary to prepare for future challenges from emerging resistance in the context of current and future pandemics.

The interface between COVID-19 and bacterial healthcare-associated infections

Ronan F. O'Toole

Summary: Recent data indicate the occurrence of hospital-onset bacterial infections, including antibiotic-resistant isolates, in COVID-19 patients. COVID-19 has impacted bacterial healthcare-associated infections in several ways, with recommended guidelines focusing on minimizing broad-spectrum antibiotic use in patient treatment.
