Navigating the Social Environment in Adolescence: The Role of Social Brain Development

Jack L. Andrews et al.

Summary: Successful navigation of the social environment during adolescence depends on social cognitive processes such as mentalizing and resistance to peer influence. However, heightened susceptibility to peer influence and hypersensitivity to social rejection in adolescents can lead to risky behavior. Interventions aimed at improving prosocial behavior and emotion regulation abilities hold promise in reducing the risk of poor mental health in adolescents.

Are people with social anxiety disorder happier alone?*

Fallon R. Goodman et al.

Summary: Social contact can enhance mood even for individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD), as they still experience higher levels of positive emotions when interacting with others compared to being alone. Despite reporting lower positive emotions in general, individuals with SAD derive positive feelings from social interactions, suggesting that interpersonal distress does not completely hinder the experience of positive affect during socializing.
