Volatility spillovers among Northeast Asia and the US: Evidence from the global financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic

Sun-Yong Choi

Summary: This study investigates the dynamic connectedness between the volatility of Northeast Asia's stock markets, namely South Korea, Japan, China, and the United States. The findings suggest that the connectedness between these markets varies over time, with the US playing a role as a net transmitter of volatility shocks. During the global financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic, interdependence increased, and the volatility shock transmitted from the Chinese market to the South Korean market has been larger since 2015.

COVID-19 and asymmetric volatility spillovers across global stock markets

Wenqi Li

Summary: The study reveals that global markets are interconnected, with volatility spillovers being time-varying, crisis-sensitive, and asymmetric. Developed markets serve as main risk transmitters, while emerging markets are the main risk receivers. Downside risk predominates financial contagion effects, with a significant amount of downside risk spilling over from the stock markets of risk transmitters into global markets.

Effects of the comprehensive and progressive agreement for trans-pacific partnership

Summary: Most member countries benefit from trade integration, while non-member countries suffer losses. The entry of the US, China, India and the EU increases benefits for member countries and decreases losses for non-member countries. The US withdrawal has negative effects, but the world as a whole gains from the trade deal.
