The cruel optimism of educational technology teacher ambassador spaces

Kali Thompson

Summary: In the past 20 years, the neoliberal ideology has significantly impacted the U.S. education system, transforming public education into a profitable business for private corporations. This paper examines the educational technology teacher ambassador programs through the lens of a former teacher and ambassador for a prominent K-12 edtech company. It argues that these exploitative spaces exploit educators' attachment to the idea of being a good enough woman teacher and perpetuate neoliberal discourses of keeping up, ultimately generating profits for edtech companies.

Summary: This study examines how teachers engage in learning about race and equity in computer science education during professional development, based on data collected from 94 participants attending a summer week-long Exploring Computer Science workshop.
