Evaluation of the characteristics of workers injured on the job requiring hospitalization, and employer compliance with OSHA's reporting requirement for these work-related hospitalizations

Summary: This study examines the compliance of Michigan employers with the OSHA regulation requiring the reporting of work-related inpatient hospitalizations. It found that over half of the companies where a worker suffered a severe injury/illness leading to hospitalization were not in compliance with the regulation. Fractures were the most frequent type of injury and manufacturing and construction were the industries with the highest number of hospitalizations.

Summary: Latino/a workers in North Carolina have the highest fatal occupational injury rate among all race/ethnicity groups, particularly among males working in construction and agriculture. Despite a decline in the fatal occupational injury rate over the study period, it remained higher than non-Latino/a White and Black workers.

Hospitalised heat-related acute kidney injury in indoor and outdoor workers in the USA

Summary: The study revealed that heat-related acute kidney injury (HR-AKI) occurred in various industries, including indoor facilities. Due to under-reporting and underascertainment, national surveillance databases underestimate the true burden of occupational HR-AKI. Clinicians should consider kidney risk from recurrent heat stress. Employers should provide interventions, such as comprehensive heat stress prevention programmes, including acclimatisation protocols for new workers, to prevent HR-AKI.
