The shocks of natural disasters on NPLs: Global evidence

Xia Chen et al.

Summary: This research examines the impact of natural disasters on non-performing loans (NPLs) using panel data from 101 countries between 1996 and 2017. By introducing interaction terms between natural disasters and different financial risks, the study investigates the moderating effects of these risks. The empirical results reveal that natural disasters have significant effects on NPLs, both in the current year and with a five-period lag, and these effects are modulated by various financial risks.
