Strategic environmental assessment implementation: variation across regions in China

Sa Ma et al.

Summary: This paper examines the differences in the implementation of Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) between the western and eastern regions of China and discusses the reasons for these disparities. The research utilizes government policy review and in-depth interviews as the main research methods, and presents disparities in intervention time, alternatives, public participation, and monitoring. These differences are caused by the impacts of local SEA regulations and policies, institutions and experts, public attitudes, local government attitudes, strength of Environmental Protection Bureau (EPB), funding, national government strategies, and policies and regulations of environmental management.

Integration of Ecosystem Services in Strategic Environmental Assessment of a Peri-Urban Development Plan

Teodoro Semeraro et al.

Summary: Strategic environmental assessment (SEA) can help decision-makers develop more sustainable plans, programs, and policies (PPPs). To align with the new frontiers of sustainable cities, PPPs should incorporate conservation objectives and strategies for increasing ecosystem services (ES). The integration of the ES concept in SEA processes requires a specific approach and methodology, as outlined in this paper. The case study of a peri-urban development plan in Gallipoli, South Italy, demonstrates the potential for developing green infrastructure as part of SEA processes for ecological urban design. Transdisciplinary collaboration among various disciplines is essential for successful implementation.
