Empathic Communication in Specialty Palliative Care Encounters: An Analysis of Opportunities and Responses

Summary: This secondary analysis examined patterns of empathic communication in specialty palliative care encounters. The study found that patients frequently express emotions, share progress, or divulge challenges as empathic opportunities, and clinicians often respond empathically and differentiate their responses based on the type of empathic opportunity. These findings are important for further research and training on how empathic responses can promote desired patient outcomes in palliative care communication.

Treatment satisfaction mediates the association between perceived physician empathy and psychological distress in a community sample of individuals with chronic pain

Summary: This study examined the relationship between perceived physician empathy and patient psychological distress among adults with chronic pain. The results showed a positive correlation between empathy and treatment satisfaction, with empathy serving as a mediator to reduce depressive and anxious symptoms in chronic pain patients. The findings suggest the importance of promoting empathetic communication in chronic pain treatment to improve patient outcomes.

Face-oriented acts of empathy in psychotherapy

Summary: Using Conversation Analytic methods, this study analyzed the various functions of face-based therapist empathy and how they are realized in psychotherapeutic settings. The findings showed that therapist empathy can maintain, enhance, threaten, or save the client's face. This study contributes to a better understanding of the functions of empathy and may inspire further research on other functions of therapist empathy in psychotherapy.

Summary: This study explores the pragmatic functions of doctors' empathic responses in text-based online medical consultations in China using discourse-analytic tools. Most empathic responses by doctors are found to facilitate the institutional task of problem-solving, while a few serve the function of self-promotion likely influenced by the e-commerce model for online medical services.
