Self-Reported Total Screen Time and Viewing Modes Are Associated with Body Dissatisfaction, Disordered Eating, and Cosmetic Surgery Intentions among Young Adults

Summary: This study examines the associations between different screen-viewing modes and body dissatisfaction, disordered eating, and cosmetic surgery intention among young adults. The results show that handheld viewing is only associated with body dissatisfaction among women while online viewing is associated with greater body dissatisfaction for both men and women. Downloaded viewing is associated with higher odds of overeating behaviors for both men and women. Although total screen time is associated with greater cosmetic surgery intention for both men and women, there are sex differences in the associations with viewing modes.

Summary: This article explores the rise in popularity of the androgynous, effeminate male beauty trend and male cosmetic surgery in China, influenced by both traditional Chinese masculinity and external trends from Korea, Japan, and the West. In a neoliberal consumer culture, men have more agency to engage in beauty practices associated with femininity, but must also negotiate with existing masculinity discourses to find their place in society, reflecting the fluidity of hybrid masculinities in China.
