Biological and cognitive theories explaining panic disorder: A narrative review

Peter Kyriakoulis et al.

Summary: This narrative review discusses and analyzes various theories of panic disorder, including biological theories, metabolic and genetic theories, respiratory and hyperventilation theories, and cognitive theory. While biological theories have guided the development of psychopharmacological treatments, their practicality may be limited compared to psychological treatments. Behavioral and cognitive models, particularly cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT), have gained support due to their effectiveness in treating panic disorder. Combination treatments have been found to be superior in certain cases, supporting the need for an integrated approach and model for panic disorder given its complex and multifactorial etiology.

Toward the nature of automatic associations: item-level computational semantic similarity and IAT-based alcohol-valence associations

Thomas E. Gladwin

Summary: This study tested the systematic covariation between model-based and behavior-based alcohol-related associations and found a significant covariance between items' computational and behavioral measures of association over participants. These results provide methodological strategies, connect computational linguistics and social-cognitive psychology, and offer a theoretical link between measures of alcohol-related associations and alcohol-related cognition and behaviors.

Effects of Training Body-Related Interpretations on Panic-Related Cognitions and Symptoms

Felix Wuertz et al.

Summary: This study examined the potential causal effects of cognitive interpretation biases (IBs) in panic disorder. The results showed that positive training led to more positive IBs, but had limited effects on panic-related symptoms. Further research is needed to improve the generalization of training effects.

Age at onset of mental disorders worldwide: large-scale meta-analysis of 192 epidemiological studies

Summary: This study emphasizes the importance of promoting good mental health, prevention, and early intervention before the onset of mental disorders. It found that different types of mental disorders have different age at onset characteristics, providing valuable guidance for the timing of interventions for specific mental disorders.
