Does Climate Change Constitute a Financial Risk to Foreign Direct Investment? An Empirical Analysis on 200 Countries from 1970 to 2020

Jihad Ait Soussane et al.

Summary: In this paper, the authors investigate the impact of climate change on foreign direct investment (FDI) net inflows. The study includes an empirical analysis using data from 200 countries and spanning from 1970 to 2020. The results indicate that climatology indicators such as mean annual temperature and precipitations have a negative effect on FDI, while certain climate-related natural hazards (floods, landslides, and cyclones) deter FDI. The severity of the negative impact is amplified in host economies dependent on agriculture and lacking significant investment in research and development. Poorer host countries also experience more severe effects of climate change on FDI compared to wealthier countries in terms of GDP per capita.

Thresholds in natural resource rents and state owned enterprise profitability: Cross country evidence

King Yoong Lim et al.

Summary: This paper contributes to the resource curse literature by examining the association between state owned enterprises (SOE) profitability and natural resource rents. It finds that there exists a threshold value of natural resource rents windfall above which SOEs would outperform privately owned enterprises (POEs) profitability. The threshold may be attributed to higher level of natural resource rents allocation at the country level and scale economies through production linkages at the industry level.

International trade and consumption-based carbon emissions: evaluating the role of composite risk for RCEP economies

Taimoor Hassan et al.

Summary: The study examines the impact of financial, economic, political, and composite risks on consumption-based carbon dioxide emissions in selected RCEP economies during the period from 1990 to 2020. It reveals that lower political risk can help mitigate emissions, while lower financial, economic, and composite risk can increase carbon emissions. Additionally, exports and renewable energy supply have a mitigating effect, while imports lead to an increase in emissions.

The impact of renewable energy, internet use and foreign direct investment on carbon dioxide emissions: A method of moments quantile analysis

Ashar Awan et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the relationship among economic growth, environmental degradation, and various factors such as foreign direct investment, urbanization, renewable energy, and information communication technology. The findings reveal an inverted U-shape relationship between economic growth and environmental degradation, supporting the validity of the Environmental Kuznets Curve. Foreign direct investment has a positive impact on economic growth at lower quantiles but becomes insignificant at higher quantiles. Urbanization promotes environmental degradation, while renewable energy mitigates carbon dioxide emissions. Information communication technology, represented by internet usage, significantly reduces environmental degradation.
