Cocaine increases stimulation-evoked serotonin efflux in the nucleus accumbens

Jason Yuen et al.

Summary: Although dopamine is the most implicated neurotransmitter in addiction, serotonin also plays a vital role. This study used N-shaped fast-scan cyclic voltammetry to investigate the acute effects of cocaine on phasic serotonin release in the nucleus accumbens core. The findings contribute to our understanding of the mechanism of action of cocaine and provide a baseline for further research in cocaine addiction.

Deep Brain Stimulation for Addictive Disorders-Where Are We Now?

Jason Yuen et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the preclinical and clinical studies of deep brain stimulation (DBS) as a novel therapy for refractory addiction. Animal studies showed that DBS reduces drug use and seeking, while human studies targeting the nucleus accumbens (NAc) had positive outcomes. Future research should explore the use of objective biomarkers and investigate DBS in other brain regions.

Deep brain stimulation for obsessive-compulsive disorder: a crisis of access

Veerle Visser-Vandewalle et al.

Summary: Deep brain stimulation is an effective but underutilized treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder. Psychologists, psychiatrists, and insurers should take action to make this therapy accessible to patients with otherwise intractable cases, in order to improve their mental health.

Brain lesions disrupting addiction map to a common human brain circuit

Juho Joutsa et al.

Summary: Drug addiction is a significant public health crisis, and new treatments are urgently needed. Research has shown that focal brain damage can lead to addiction remission, which can be used to identify potential therapeutic targets. The study analyzed cohorts of smokers with addiction and found that specific patterns of brain connectivity were associated with addiction remission. These findings were reproducible across different cohorts and specific to addiction metrics.

Assessing methamphetamine-related cue reactivity in people with methamphetamine use disorder relative to controls

Alexandre A. Guerin et al.

Summary: The results of this study indicate that individuals with methamphetamine use disorder show strong subjective and selective physiological reactivity to methamphetamine cues, which is not observed in the control group. Co-morbid sedative use and intravenous methamphetamine use contribute to increased craving reactivity, while low inhibitory control is associated with increased craving across the cue paradigm.

Cocaine-Induced Changes in Tonic Dopamine Concentrations Measured Using Multiple-Cyclic Square Wave Voltammetry in vivo

Jason Yuen et al.

Summary: For over 40 years, in vivo microdialysis techniques have been crucial in studying the effects of illicit substances on dopamine levels in the brain, but limitations have led to the development of a new electrochemical method known as M-CSWV. This method provides faster recordings of dopamine level changes, allowing for a more detailed understanding of neuronal responses to drug administration.
