Spatial Inequalities in Access to Micromobility Services: An Analysis of Moped-Style Scooter Sharing Systems in Barcelona

Xavier Bach et al.

Summary: This study examines the determinants of spatial coverage of four moped-style scooter sharing services in Barcelona and finds that centrality, household disposable income, and topography are the main factors influencing the coverage. The results highlight the importance of public sector involvement in designing the spatial coverage areas to ensure equity and transportation justice and avoid exclusion of less attractive areas by private sector designs.

Exploring the spatio-temporal dynamics of moped-style scooter sharing services in urban areas

Daniela Arias-Molinares et al.

Summary: Spain has one of the highest shared mobility fleets globally, with moped-style scooter sharing expanding rapidly in recent years. However, research on the spatio-temporal travel patterns of this mode is lacking. This study aims to fill this research gap by analyzing GPS records to assess the dynamics influencing moped usage levels and self-balance potential, providing insights for operators to optimize vehicle distribution routes.

Docked vs. dockless equity: Comparing three micromobility service geographies

Si'an Meng et al.

Summary: The distribution of docked bike-share systems is extremely unequal, while dockless systems greatly reduce geographical inequalities relative to docked. Limited micromobility service is found in low-density areas and neighborhoods with low median household incomes, smaller shares of young people, and fewer zero-car households. Docked services are less prevalent in communities of color, and the implementation of dockless systems yields mixed outcomes for racial equity.

Using the five Ws to explore bikeshare equity in Santiago, Chile

Ignacio Tiznado-Aitken et al.

Summary: Various studies indicate that bikeshare systems have positive impacts on health, social cohesion, urban livability, and urban congestion. However, there are concerns about their equity goals not being achieved, especially regarding low-income individuals and women. More research is needed on how well bikeshare systems function in fragmented and unequal cities, such as those in Latin America.

Environmental performance of shared micromobility and personal alternatives using integrated modal LCA

Anne de Bortoli

Summary: A comprehensive study in Paris compared the environmental performance of shared micromobility services to private alternatives through an integrated modal Life Cycle Assessment, revealing that electric micromobility falls between active modes and personal ICE modes with impacts primarily driven by vehicle manufacturing. Vehicle lifetime mileage has a significant effect on environmental performance, and solely focusing on carbon footprint can lead to biased decisions, highlighting the need for a multi-criteria LCA to protect the planet.
