Exploring how social capital and learning are related to the resilience of Dutch arable farmers

Thomas Slijper et al.

Summary: This paper examines the relationship between social capital, learning, and farm resilience. The study finds that social capital and learning contribute to farmers' ability to adapt and, in some cases, also relate to robustness and transformations. The results highlight the importance of informal social networks, formal networks, and knowledge exchange in facilitating farm adaptation and transformation.

Implications of alternative farm management patterns to promote resilience in extensive sheep farming. A Spanish case study

Daniele Bertolozzi-Caredio et al.

Summary: This research examines how alternative farm management patterns contribute to building resilience in the extensive sheep farming system of Huesca, northeastern Spain. Results show that different management patterns play important roles in maintaining traditional functions and readjusting farm functions. Matching with natural resources, traditions, and farmer networks is crucial resilience attributes.

Resilience capacities as perceived by European farmers

Alisa Spiegel et al.

Summary: This study investigates how European farmers perceive the resilience capacities of their farms. The research extends beyond previous studies by covering all three resilience capacities, considering various shocks and stresses, and analyzing farms from diverse farming systems across Europe. The results indicate that farmers with higher perceived resilience capacities tend to have lower risk aversion, focus on providing public goods, implement more risk management strategies, participate more in networks, and have greater openness to innovation.

Assessing future sustainability and resilience of farming systems with a participatory method: A case study on extensive sheep farming in Huesca, Spain

Wim Paas et al.

Summary: This study introduces a six-step methodology to assist researchers and farming system actors in understanding the sustainability and resilience of farming systems in the future by evaluating current performance, determining critical thresholds, assessing impacts, identifying alternative systems, determining implementation strategies, and assessing compatibility with future scenarios. Through a case study, it was found that the farming system is at risk of decline or collapse, but participants proposed strategies to improve alternative systems.

Participatory assessment of critical thresholds for resilient and sustainable European farming systems

Wim Paas et al.

Summary: Farming systems in Europe are facing multiple stresses and shocks, potentially pushing the systems beyond critical thresholds and affecting sustainability and resilience. Stakeholders are particularly concerned about economic viability and food production levels. Critical thresholds interact across system levels and domains, with low economic viability leading to lower attractiveness of farming systems and difficulties in maintaining natural resources and biodiversity.

Stakeholder perspectives to improve risk management in European farming systems

Daniele Bertolozzi-Caredio et al.

Summary: The research identifies potential improvements to risk management across 11 European Union farming systems, proposing a participatory approach that accounts for multi-stakeholder perspectives. Results show necessary improvements differ based on the origin of shocks or pressures, with financial instruments being more crucial for farms dependent on direct payments, and tailored tools and knowledge being important for different levels of farm flexibility. The findings suggest extending stakeholder involvement in risk management to unconventional roles, and discuss avenues for overall improvement including a knowledge network, collaboration, and integrated financial and policy instruments.
