Do globalization and nuclear energy intensify the environmental costs in top nuclear energy-consuming countries?

Muhammad Sadiq et al.

Summary: This study aims to assess the reduction of environmental costs by using nuclear energy efficiency and technological innovation from the perspective of the globalization process. The results show that nuclear energy and technological innovation reduce environmental costs by decreasing carbon emissions, while globalization increases environmental costs by releasing more carbon emissions. Additionally, there exists bidirectional causality among nuclear energy, renewable energy, and carbon emissions. Therefore, countries with high nuclear energy consumption should prioritize nuclear energy efficiency to control environmental costs and achieve a cost-effective low-carbon economy. Finally, this perspective calls for policymakers to substantiate their decisions more effectively.

Testing the asymmetric effect of financial stability towards carbon neutrality target: The case of Iceland and global comparison

Chi-Wei Su et al.

Summary: In the last decade, Iceland's CO2 emissions have decreased, and the country has maintained financial stability. However, Iceland still has higher per-capita CO2 emissions compared to other European nations. This research examines the asymmetric effect of financial stability on CO2 emissions in Iceland using a quarterly dataset from 1995 to 2019. The findings show that positive changes in financial stability reduce CO2 emissions, while negative changes have no impact. Additionally, positive changes in energy use and income increase CO2 emissions, while negative changes in energy use and income have mitigating effects. Negative changes in trade openness increase CO2 emissions, while positive changes have mitigating effects.

Does Degree of Stringency Matter? Revisiting the Pollution Haven Hypothesis in BRICS Countries

Yuzhao Wen et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the validity of the Pollution Haven Hypothesis (PHH) in BRICS nations by empirically examining the relationship between foreign direct investment (FDI), air pollution, and environmental regulations. The findings confirm that an increase in FDI leads to environmental degradation, supporting the existence of PHH in BRICS. The study also suggests that pollution-intensive FDIs are more likely to occur at lower levels of stringency. However, stricter regulations may not always result in higher pollution-intensive FDI. The study highlights the importance of environmental policy laxity in attracting FDI to BRICS countries and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
