Genetic diversity and population structure in a regional collection of Kersting's groundnut (Macrotyloma geocarpum (Harms) Marechal & Baudet)

Konoutan M. Kafoutchoni et al.

Summary: Kersting's groundnut is an important source of protein and essential nutrients in West Africa, but has low genetic diversity and exhibits high levels of inbreeding. Significant genetic differentiation exists among populations, and isolation by distance was observed. The study identified distinct clusters based on genetic data, providing insights for breeding strategies to increase production of Kersting's groundnut.

Potential impact of climate change on the distribution of some selected legumes in Cameroon and adjoining Nigeria border

Gabriel Salako et al.

Summary: The study selected four economically important legume species from the Nigeria-Cameroon border in West Africa and predicted the impact of climate change on their distribution using ensemble species distribution model (ESDM). The results identified precipitation as the most influential environmental variable affecting species distribution and projected independent habitat shifts (gain/loss) for the species due to climate change in the future. The findings suggest the importance of conservation efforts through regulated land use in specific regions to prevent species loss attributable to climate change.

Summary: This paper investigates the genetic resources of grain legumes in sub-Saharan Africa, with a focus on the native cowpea and introduced common bean. The study reveals a high diversity of Vigna and Phaseolus species in tropical Africa, with differences in germplasm collections between native and introduced beans. Additionally, the study found that the physicochemical and cytogenomic diversity of native Vigna species is higher than previously thought, providing valuable food resources for reducing food insecurity in African developing countries.
