Basal ganglia atrophy-associated causal structural network degeneration in Parkinson's disease

Rong Li et al.

Summary: Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by both motor and non-motor symptoms. Research suggests that as the disease progresses, gray matter atrophy in Parkinson's patients spreads from the basal ganglia to other brain regions, potentially playing a key role in motor and non-motor circuits.

Striatal dopamine transporter degeneration in right-handed REM sleep behavior disorder patients progresses faster in the left hemisphere

Tomoyuki Miyamoto et al.

Summary: This study found that right-handed IRBD patients have asymmetric nigrostriatal dopaminergic function, with a faster rate of decline in the left striatum compared to the right striatum. This asymmetry may be associated with the early pathological process of Parkinson's disease or dementia with Lewy bodies.

Dynamic changes in brain lateralization correlate with human cognitive performance

Xinran Wu et al.

Summary: Hemispheric lateralization is a core principle of human brain organization underlying cognition. However, new evidence suggests that brain networks exhibit dynamic changes in functional lateralization over time. In this study, we used dynamic network approaches to map the spatiotemporal architecture of whole-brain lateralization and found distinct dynamics in lower-order sensorimotor systems and higher-order associative networks. We identified two aspects of the dynamics: laterality fluctuations and laterality reversals, which are associated with moderate and extreme changes in laterality over time, respectively. These dynamics are associated with language function, cognitive flexibility, and intra/interhemispheric communication. Furthermore, the dynamics are correlated with functional connectivity changes of higher-order brain networks, as well as regional metabolism and structural connectivity. Our findings provide insights into the adaptive nature of the lateralized brain and have implications for the study of human cognition, genetics, and brain disorders.

Multimodal striatal neuromarkers in distinguishing parkinsonian variant of multiple system atrophy from idiopathic Parkinson's disease

Huize Pang et al.

Summary: An automatic classification method based on multimodal striatal alterations was developed to distinguish between parkinsonian variant of multiple system atrophy (MSA-P) and Idiopathic Parkinson's disease (IPD). The machine learning algorithm accurately classified the two diseases by depicting dysfunction in the dorsal striatum and the prefrontal lobe and cerebellum through specific brain connections, with the functional activity of the dorsolateral putamen being the most important marker.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease patients and high-level task-control deficits, as well as the effects of levodopa on network dynamics. Levodopa intake improves dwell time in PD patients and is related to changes in Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale. PD patients have fewer occurrences in State II and decreased connectivity between sensorimotor and control networks.

Investigation of sensorimotor dysfunction in Parkinson disease by resting-state fMRI

Summary: Functional MRI based on independent component analysis revealed significant differences in brain functional properties between Parkinson's disease patients with sensorimotor function impairment and normal controls. The study identified increased activity in bilateral posterior insula, but decreased activity in bilateral cerebellum hemisphere, supplementary motor area, and other regions in PD patients. These findings suggest potential biomarkers for understanding the neurological degeneration in Parkinson's disease.

Cortical structural differences in major depressive disorder correlate with cell type-specific transcriptional signatures

Summary: This study investigates the correlation between cell type-specific gene expression changes and cortical structural differences in individuals with major depressive disorder. The expression of MDD-associated genes spatially correlates with morphometric differences, suggesting a link between molecular and structural changes relevant for MDD. Analysis of cell type-specific signature genes indicates that microglia and neuronal specific transcriptional changes play a significant role in the observed correlation with MDD-specific morphometric differences.

Human Lateralization, Maternal Effects and Neurodevelopmental Disorders

Gianluca Malatesta et al.

Summary: Behavioral laterality and hemispheric asymmetries in humans are influenced by genetic, environmental, and epigenetic factors. Early postnatal development involves a sensitive period during which interactions with caregivers can canalize hemispheric lateralization. Adult caregivers, particularly mothers, play a significant role in shaping the lateralized behavior of infants, which may have been selected for as an adaptive trait for offspring fitness. The left-cradling bias is an example of a heritable behavioral trait along the maternal line, and reductions in this bias have been linked to neurodevelopmental disorders.
