Hypertrophic osteopathy in South Australian koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) with concurrent pulmonary actinomycosis

J. E. Griffith et al.

Summary: Pulmonary actinomycosis was found in South Australian koalas between 2016 and 2019, with four koalas showing secondary hypertrophic osteopathy. Radiographical and pathological examinations revealed periosteal reactions on multiple appendicular skeletal bones, typical of hypertrophic osteopathy. This is the first description of hypertrophic osteopathy in koalas associated with pulmonary actinomycosis, a condition well characterised in domestic species but rarely reported in marsupials.
