Field evaluation of the impact of cocoa swollen shoot virus disease infection on yield traits of different cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) clones in Ghana

Atta Ofori et al.

Summary: Cocoa swollen shoot virus disease (CSSVD) is a major disease affecting cocoa cultivation in Ghana and other West African countries. This study evaluated the impact of CSSVD on yield component traits of cocoa clones and identified clones that are tolerant to CSSVD. The research found that symptomless trees outperformed symptomatic trees in terms of dry bean yield and number of beans per pod. Several high-yielding and CSSVD-tolerant clones were identified for further breeding and deployment in Ghana.

Rehabilitation practices in cocoa agroforestry systems mitigate outbreaks of termites and support cocoa tree development and yield

Christian T. L. Djuideu et al.

Summary: The study found that farm rehabilitation practices are associated with high beta diversity of shade trees and linked with a high diversity of beneficial termite species. Rehabilitation pruning is a suitable practice to rejuvenate aging trees and increase short-term cocoa yield while mitigating the negative effects of insect pests such as termites.

Impact of pollen genetic origin on compatibility, agronomic traits, and physicochemical quality of cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) beans

Simon Perrez Akoa et al.

Summary: Incompatibility within and between cocoa trees/clones is a major factor reducing cocoa yield. Genetic and geographic origin of cocoa, farm location, and hand-pollination play important roles in improving cocoa quality. Selecting compatible combinations, agronomic traits, and pollen donors can enhance bean quality.
