Effect of Curcumin on Glycaemic and Lipid Parameters in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

Luis E. Simental-Mendia et al.

Summary: The study aimed to synthesize existing evidence on the effects of curcumin on glycemic and lipid parameters in PCOS. Meta-analysis showed a significant reduction in fasting glucose, insulin levels, and HOMA-IR index after curcumin therapy in PCOS patients. No significant changes were observed in lipid parameters with the use of curcumin.

Revisiting pharmacological potentials ofNigella sativaseed: A promising option forCOVID-19 prevention and cure

Mohammad Nazrul Islam et al.

Summary: Black seed and its active compounds have been historically recognized as an effective herbal remedy that can establish a balanced inflammatory response and promote healthy immune response. They have shown substantial therapeutic outcomes against immune disturbance, autophagy dysfunction, oxidative stress, ischemia, inflammation, and various comorbidities of COVID-19. The bioactive compounds of black seed, especially thymoquinone, alpha-hederin, and nigellidine, could be promising herbal drugs to combat COVID-19, with further preclinical and clinical trials needed to investigate their efficacy and potency under specific pathophysiological conditions of the disease.

Measuring the global disease burden of polycystic ovary syndrome in 194 countries: Global Burden of Disease Study 2017

Jingjing Liu et al.

Summary: The study revealed slight increases in age-standardized incidence of PCOS and associated disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) among women of reproductive age globally from 2007 to 2017, especially in middle-SDI and high-middle SDI regions. The highest increases in both the age-standardized incidence rates and DALYs rates were observed in Ethiopia, Brazil, and China. Understanding the differences in the burden of PCOS across various locations could be valuable for resource allocation and formulation of effective preventive strategies.

Protective Effects of Black Cumin (Nigella sativa) and Its Bioactive Constituent, Thymoquinone against Kidney Injury: An Aspect on Pharmacological Insights

Md Abdul Hannan et al.

Summary: Black cumin and its vital compound, thymoquinone, have shown protective effects against kidney injury caused by various xenobiotics through antioxidation, anti-inflammation, anti-apoptosis, and antifibrosis mechanisms. Clinical trials have demonstrated improvements in blood and urine parameters in advanced CKD patients. However, further research is needed to explore targeted delivery mechanisms and to gather more clinical evidence for recommending black cumin to CKD patients.
