Attention allocation between item and order information in short-term memory

Dominic Guitard et al.

Summary: Recent research has shown that participants in immediate memory for verbal lists can choose to encode information in a way that prioritizes either item or order, depending on the test they expect. This study explores whether participants can control their attention to items and order in a graded manner, and the results suggest that they can. The study also reveals an asymmetry in the effects of divided attention, with order performance being more impaired than item performance.

Tradeoffs between item and order information in short-term memory

Dominic Guitard et al.

Summary: The study showed that dual-list impairment is greater when both lists are encoded for an order test compared to when one list is encoded for an item test. Additionally, there is a dual-list cost relative to one list for both order and item information. The results support a version of the common resource hypothesis where both item and order processing occur regardless of the type of test expected.

Phonological similarity in the serial recall task hinders item recall, not just order

Steven Roodenrys et al.

Summary: The study found that serial recall of similar sounding items is poorer than that of dissimilar sounding items. Traditionally, it is believed that this is due to the detrimental effect on memory for the order of the words in the list and not on memory for the words themselves. However, the detrimental effect of phonological similarity on item memory when compensatory processes are not available has not been investigated.

Predicting Negative Affect Variability and Spontaneous Emotion Regulation: Can Working Memory Span Tasks Estimate Emotion Regulatory Capacity?

Karin G. Coifman et al.

Summary: The study found that working memory plays an important role in emotion regulation processes, with Reading Span tasks serving as tools in research on emotion processing and regulation, helping predict the ability to regulate negative emotions.
