Evaluation, simulation, and optimization of land use spatial patterns for high-quality development: A case study of Zhengzhou city, China

Wenchao Zhu et al.

Summary: High-intensity land use and resource overload-induced regional land use spatial pattern are crucial and challenging for high-quality development. This study proposes a comprehensive framework that integrates resource environment carrying capacity and land use change to optimize the spatial pattern of land use. The results show that the optimization of land use spatial pattern should consider the double influence of resource environment carrying capacity and land use change.

Templates for multifunctional landscape design

Sandra Lavorel et al.

Summary: This study systematically analyzed the effects of fragmentation on multifunctionality and its interactions with land-use intensity. The results showed that both land-use intensity and fragmentation can significantly affect the multifunctionality of ecosystem services, and that fragmentation can mitigate the negative effects of land-use intensity on multifunctionality.

Mapping trade-offs among urban fringe land use functions to accurately support spatial planning

Yuefeng Lyu et al.

Summary: This study aims to analyze the spatial distribution and interactions of LUFs in urban fringe areas to identify synergies and trade-offs in urban expansion and environmental planning. By using an improved LUFs classification system and fine scale datasets, nine sub-land use functions in Binzhou city, China were quantified and two spatial planning-zoning schemes were proposed based on land use function and human utilization intensity.

Improving high-quality development with environmental regulation and industrial structure in China

Summary: This study examines the dynamic relationship between environmental regulation, industrial structure advancement, and economic high quality, and finds that economic high quality has a spatial spillover effect. It also innovatively points out that environmental regulation positively regulates the relationship between advanced industrial structure and economic high quality.

Summary: This study measured the HQD level of the Yangtze River Economic Belt from the perspective of development quality by introducing efficiency thinking, and found that its level showed a pattern of rising first, then falling, and then rising, with noticeable regional heterogeneity, spatial agglomeration, and back-and-forth movement.

Evaluation and prediction of the level of high-quality development: A case study of the Yellow River Basin, China

Long Jiang et al.

Summary: The study found that the level of HQD in the Yellow River Basin changed dynamically over time and has improved to varying degrees in all provinces. The cultural subsystem was identified as hindering further improvement of HQD, with the proportion of the cultural industry in GDP being a main obstacle factor in most provinces. Speeding up economic development and increasing ecological protection emerged as the optimal development path for the Yellow River Basin.

An analysis of land use conflict potentials based on ecological-production-living function in the southeast coastal area of China

Lilin Zou et al.

Summary: This study constructed a spatial identification and intensity diagnosis model of potential land use function conflicts based on the ecological-production-living perspective of sustainable development, and found that there were potential conflicts in different land use functions in the study area. Management strategies should be tailored according to spatial distribution, manifestation, and conflict degree. The model and index developed in this study can accurately reflect the actual situation of land use in fast-growing areas, providing valuable references for land space planning and management.

Identification of land use conflicts in China's coastal zones: From the perspective of ecological security

Shanshan Zong et al.

Summary: The study established an index system for evaluating the importance of ecological security, identifying land use conflicts in China's coastal zones in 2018. Prominent spatio-temporal mismatches were found among cultivated land, construction land, and ecological layout. Regional differences in the distribution of LUCs were observed, with higher concentrations near-land side and southern regions.

Spatial-temporal pattern of land use conflict in China and its multilevel driving mechanisms

Song Jiang et al.

Summary: This study developed a methodology to derive the spatio-temporal patterns of land use conflict in China from 2001 to 2017, finding that areas with strong land use conflict had a higher frequency of land use change, with significant differences between two sides of the Hu Huanyong line. The main types of land use conflict in China included strong competition between cultivated land and grassland, rapid expansion of construction land, and high risk of desertification.

Summary: The LSER policy aims to address the lack of overall planning and united goals in traditional ecological restoration efforts, proposing a multi-scale evaluation framework for LSER planning strategy making. This framework was applied in Jiangsu Yangtze River Economic Belt in China, leading to the identification of county-level LSER zoning and grading, town-level ecological engineering types, and a regional ecological network. These research results can assist in achieving the sustainable development goals of LSER planning.

The consequences for stream water quality of long-term changes in landscape patterns: Implications for land use management and policies

Antonio Carlos Pinheiro Fernandes et al.

Summary: The study investigated the relationship between landscape metrics and surface water quality in the Ave River Basin in Portugal, revealing strong correlations between water quality and land use characteristics. The findings suggest that improvements in water quality could be achieved through short-term measures such as reducing agricultural fields and increasing forest edges density, as well as long-term measures like decreasing artificial surfaces and increasing forested areas surrounding agricultural fields.

Understanding land-use change conflict: a systematic review of case studies

Lotte de Jong et al.

Summary: The increasing demand for food, water, and shelter has changed the way land is used, resulting in conflicts. Research has shown that population growth, overlapping land rights, ethnic fragmentation, and economic inequality are the root causes of conflict related to land-use change, while rises in land prices are the most frequently reported immediate cause. Reported institutional causes indicate that governance mechanisms are not fully equipped to handle the complexity of observed land-use changes.

Identifying the potential areas of afforestation projects using cost-benefit analysis based on ecosystem services and farmland suitability: A case study of the Grain for Green Project in Jinan, China

Kai Li et al.

Summary: This study developed a methodology using cost-benefit analysis to identify potential areas for afforestation, using the Grain for Green Project in China as a case study. Results showed spatial heterogeneity in ecosystem service increases and farmland suitability indicators, with CBA outperforming the slope degree method in identifying areas with higher benefits at lower costs. The decision-making framework proposed in this study can contribute to delicate afforestation management, particularly in resource-limited situations.

Which night lights data should we use in economics, and where?

John Gibson et al.

Summary: Popular DMSP night lights data are flawed and less effective in predicting GDP compared to newer and better VIIRS data, especially at lower levels of spatial hierarchy and in lower density areas. The relationship between city lights and GDP is noisier with DMSP data, while spatial inequality is considerably understated, particularly in urban sectors and higher density areas. Adjustments made to correct for top-coding in DMSP data only have a modest effect and still miss key features of economic activity in big cities.
