E-participation and engagement in urban planning: experiences from the Baltic cities

Summary: This study examines public engagement strategies and ICT-enabled approaches in the post-socialist context based on an analysis of plan-making processes in 12 Baltic cities. The findings indicate that e-participation is an integral part of city planning practices, contributing to diverse informing and consulting processes. Combining e-participation with follow-up deliberation leads to more meaningful participation, showcasing the potential of blended and iterative participatory strategies. Furthermore, ICT-enabled self-organization drives a shift towards greater transparency, accountability, and civic involvement in the post-socialist context.

Household attitudes toward wastewater recycling in Saudi Arabia

Summary: This study investigates household attitudes towards wastewater recycling and the factors influencing these attitudes through a questionnaire survey of 625 households. The findings show that households are more accepting of reusing treated greywater for laundering than bathing, and factors such as age, residential location, and education significantly influence attitudes towards reuse. Gender and nationality, however, do not have a significant impact. The study suggests that behavioral change campaigns are essential in scaling up wastewater recycling to reduce reliance on expensive seawater desalination and dwindling freshwater resources.
