Post-Cold War civil conflict and the role of history and religion: A stochastic search variable selection approach

Michael Jetter et al.

Summary: This study examines 34 potential conflict factors in 175 post-Cold-War countries using stochastic search variable selection method. The findings reveal that past conflicts are the most powerful predictor of current conflicts, and higher proportions of Jewish, Muslim, or Christian citizens are associated with increased conflicts. Economic and political factors are found to be less relevant compared to colonial origin and religion.
