Gaining lead firm position in an emerging industry: A global production networks analysis of two Scandinavian energy firms in offshore wind power

Samson Afewerki et al.

Summary: This research analyzes the evolutionary trajectories of Orsted (Denmark) and Equinor (Norway) in the emerging offshore wind power industry from the perspective of the industry life cycle. The study unpacks the concept of competitive capabilities development processes of lead firms, and demonstrates that these processes are shaped by industry characteristics and co-evolve with broader industry developments and extra-firm dynamics.

Innovation in the Norwegian aquaculture industry

Samson Afewerki et al.

Summary: Global aquaculture production has experienced rapid growth in recent decades, largely due to innovative advancements in production processes and competitiveness. However, there is a lack of studies examining the long-term impacts of these innovations on the aquaculture industry and the innovation system as a whole. This paper reviews the innovation process in the Norwegian salmon aquaculture industry since its inception in 1970, with a focus on the increasing industry complexity and the role of suppliers in driving innovation. These insights are relevant to the global aquaculture industry, as salmon is one of the most technologically advanced species, and innovations in this sector can be adapted for other species and different production systems as well.

Emerging trends in science and news of climate change threats to and adaptation of aquaculture

Halley E. S. Froehlich et al.

Summary: Food production is a major contributor to climate change, and aquaculture is now facing increasing vulnerability to a changing climate. However, research and public awareness on the implications of climate change for aquaculture are still comparatively limited. The focus has mainly been on temperature, sea level rise, and ocean acidification, with coverage concentrated in Asia, Europe, and North/Central America.

A social license to operate for aquaculture: Reflections from Tasmania

Karen A. Alexander

Summary: The concept of 'Social License to Operate' (SLO) is widely used in the vocabulary of natural resource development worldwide. This study focuses on Tasmania as a case study to investigate SLO in aquaculture and to reflect on the lessons learnt. The findings show that aquaculture SLO depends on various factors such as messaging, perceptions, industry context, and trustworthiness of actors. The study suggests that industry and government messaging should consider a broader range of factors beyond just economic and environmental sustainability.

Influence of Price Variability and Financial Ratios on Business Failure in the Atlantic Salmon Industry

Dengjun Zhang et al.

Summary: Despite its rapid growth, salmon farming is risky due to production risk and market volatility, leading to uncertain revenue and potential business failure. This study examines the impact of price variability and financial ratios on the hazard rate in the Norwegian salmon farming industry. The results suggest that price variability and certain financial ratios, such as retained earnings/total assets and equity/total liabilities, jointly influence the likelihood of business failure.

Profitability differences between public and private firms: The case of Norwegian salmon aquaculture

Marius Sikveland et al.

Summary: As aquaculture becomes more industrialized, capital requirements increase and the sources of profitability vary between listed and private companies. Listed firms can increase profitability through working capital optimization but are negatively affected by operating leverage and liquidity. Private firms historically outperform in terms of return on assets, but the difference is not statistically significant.

Technology legitimation and strategic coupling: A cross-national study of floating wind power in Norway and Scotland

Danny MacKinnon et al.

Summary: This paper explores the process of legitimation for emerging technologies and how they align with societal rules and norms. It argues that legitimation is a transregional process where actors seek international support and that it functions through different stages of durability. It provides empirical evidence through the case study of the Hywind floating wind power technology.

Fish protection during fish production. Organizational conditions for fish welfare

Kristine Vedal Storkersen et al.

Summary: Research shows that fish farm personnel face a multiple protection dilemma, where fish welfare often loses in a battle with profitable production objectives and protection of wild salmon. Personnel play a crucial role in advocating for fish welfare, which has not been extensively described in organizational literature. Organizations should be structured to reduce and handle this dilemma, which may be relevant for all production in open environments.

The value of responsibly farmed fish: A hedonic price study of ASC-certified whitefish

Frank Asche et al.

Summary: Several recent studies have found price premiums for wild seafood certified as sustainably produced, but little attention has been given to consumer preferences for sustainably certified farmed fish. This study is the first to investigate price premiums associated with an ecolabel for farmed seafood, specifically the ASC label. Results indicate the existence of price premiums for ASC-certified whitefish in the German market, varying by species, retailer, and brand.

A 20-year retrospective review of global aquaculture

Rosamond L. Naylor et al.

Summary: The sustainability of aquaculture has been intensely debated since 2000, with major contributions coming from inland aquaculture in Asia. There have been significant advances in feed efficiency and fish nutrition, but reliance on marine ingredients remains a challenge. Molluscs and seaweed have potential for ecosystem services and global nutritional security, but their quantification, valuation, and market development are still underexploited.
