A Rapid Review of Reflective Supervision in Social Work

Summary: Reflective supervision (RS) is an important component in supporting vulnerable populations in social work practice. However, there is a lack of consistent definition and understanding of the impact of RS. Best practice includes having a supportive manager and peers, and regular RS sessions. Task-focused RS should be avoided. Good RS improves stress and engagement at work, leading to more client-centered practice.

Forensic medical examinations: The body as gateway to healing after child sexual abuse

Summary: Despite concerns about the impact of forensic medical examinations on children and young people, professionals and adolescents involved in the study generally support these examinations as part of a holistic therapeutic response to child sexual abuse. The study identifies themes related to the experience of the examination, such as imposition, unknown nature, focus on the body, feeling exposed, and having a say. The findings highlight the importance of a trauma-informed approach, which emphasizes information sharing and supporting the autonomy of the young person throughout the process.

Reactions to the disclosure of intrafamilial childhood sexual abuse: Findings from the National Sexual Assault Online Hotline

Summary: This study examined the initial disclosure experiences of intrafamilial child sexual abuse (CSA) victims and found that nearly one-third of the children received negative reactions to their disclosures. Compared to friends and intimate partners, victims were more likely to discuss negative reactions from family members. The findings underscore the importance of educating the public, especially parents, on how to respond to CSA disclosures.

Patterns of disclosure and perceived societal responses after child sexual abuse

Summary: The study finds that a significant number of abused girls and most abused boys have not disclosed their abuse to anyone, which prevents them from accessing protection and rehabilitation. Those who do disclose their abuse more often seek help from their peers rather than adults or professionals. There is a mixed perception of societal responses to disclosure, with more severe abuse being associated with more negative responses. Most participants stated that they do not need professional support, but among those who sought help, half were satisfied and a third were dissatisfied.

Hostile relationships in social work practice: anxiety, hate and conflict in long-term work with involuntary service users

Summary: Recent research has shown that relationships between social workers and 'involuntary clients' can be characterized by mutual suspicion and even hatred, with hostile relationships often enacted through conflict and resistance, particularly during home visits. Social workers must recognize and tolerate hostility and hate, refrain from retaliating, and demonstrate compassion and care towards service users to improve outcomes.
