Crash injury severity analysis of E-Bike Riders: A random parameters generalized ordered probit model with heterogeneity in means

Fangrong Chang et al.

Summary: Fatal crashes involving electric bikes have increased significantly in China, posing a challenge to traffic safety. This study analyzed 2222 police-reported crash records from 2014 to 2016 in Hunan province to investigate factors affecting e-bike rider injury severity. The random parameters generalized ordered probit model showed superior performance in modeling injury severity, highlighting the importance of considering various factors such as road characteristics, environmental conditions, and crash types.

Spatiotemporal analysis of crash severity on rural highway: A case study in Anhui, China

Yikai Chen et al.

Summary: This study focuses on analyzing the severity of rural highway crashes using the geographically and temporally weighted ordered logistic regression (GTWOLR) model. The optimal kernel function and kernel bandwidth are explored, and different models are compared based on their goodness of fit. The results reveal that the GTWOLR model with a Bi-square kernel function and fixed bandwidth has the best fit. The spatial and temporal characteristics of the contributing factors are analyzed in the best model, and countermeasures for improving traffic safety on rural highways are proposed.

Spatial predictions of harsh driving events using statistical and machine learning methods

Apostolos Ziakopoulos et al.

Summary: This research presents a framework for analyzing driving data to evaluate road safety and identify critical locations. The study found that geographical features and road type have an impact on the frequency of harsh driving events, while the effect of lane number is uncertain. By averaging the results of different methods, it is possible to predict the frequency of harsh driving events in each road segment.

Application of Bayesian Space-Time interaction models for Deer-Vehicle crash hotspot identification

Md Tanvir Ashraf et al.

Summary: The objective of this research was to identify and prioritize deer-vehicle crash hotspots using Bayesian spatiotemporal models. The findings showed positive associations between forest area, vegetation, and wetland percentages with DVC frequency, and a negative association with the percentage of developed land use. It was suggested that deer population management is necessary to minimize DVC risks. The identification of hotspots provides important information for safety engineers and policymakers to implement area-specific countermeasures.

Exploring factors affecting the injury severity of freeway tunnel crashes: A random parameters approach with heterogeneity in means and variances

Amjad Pervez et al.

Summary: Freeway tunnel crashes can be more severe than crashes on open roads, but there have been very few studies on the severity of injuries in tunnel crashes. This study collected a comprehensive dataset of tunnel crashes in Hunan province, China and developed a random parameters model to explore the influence of various factors. The study found that factors such as curves, speeding, and driver age can significantly affect the risk of severe injury outcomes in tunnel crashes.

Summary: Ranking sites with promise is crucial for cost-effective engineering improvement on roadway traffic safety. This study proposes a Bayesian multivariate spatio-temporal interaction model based approach for ranking sites, which significantly improves the overall goodness-of-fit performance. Results indicate that considering spatio-temporal correlations and interactions affects the identified crash-contributing factors and estimated safety effects.

Effects of stricter drunk-driving laws on alcohol-related road traffic death, injury, and crash rates in South Korea: A synthetic counterfactual approach using Bayesian structural time-series models

Sang Jun Eun

Summary: The stricter drunk-driving laws implemented in Korea in December 2018 led to a significant decrease in alcohol-related road traffic crash, injury, and minor injury rates. However, the reduction in alcohol-related road traffic death and severe injury rates was not statistically significant, indicating that further research is needed to enhance the effectiveness of these laws in reducing alcohol-related road traffic outcomes.

Exploring Driver Injury Severity in Single-Vehicle Crashes under Foggy Weather and Clear Weather

Fulu Wei et al.

Summary: This study investigated and compared the influencing factors of driver injury severity in single-vehicle crashes under foggy and clear weather conditions. Significant differences were found in the factors affecting crash severity in foggy and clear weather, with factors such as young drivers, non-dry road surfaces, and signal control significantly affecting foggy weather crashes but not clear weather crashes. The findings suggest potential countermeasures to reduce crash severity in both foggy and clear weather.

An accelerated hierarchical Bayesian crash frequency model with accommodation of spatiotemporal interactions

Haipeng Cui et al.

Summary: The study proposes a Bayesian spatiotemporal interaction (BSTI) approach for crash frequency modeling with an integrated nested Laplace approximation (INLA) method to expedite the Bayesian estimation process. In the study area of Manhattan, the BSTI model with Type II interaction is found to outperform others in terms of goodness-of-fit and the ability to reduce the dependency of residuals. The research also suggests that unobserved heterogeneity is mostly attributed to spatial effects instead of temporal effects.
