Human Capital, Trade Competitiveness and Environmental Efficiency Convergence Across Asia Pacific Countries

Florence Appiah-Twum et al.

Summary: This study investigates the environmental efficiency of 14 Asia Pacific economies. Using a metafrontier super epsilon based model (EBM), we evaluate environmental efficiency, taking into account environmental technology heterogeneity. We compare the convergence of environmental efficiency across different regions and analyze the impact of trade competitiveness on environmental efficiency. Additionally, we explore the effects of green technology and human capital on environmental efficiency from the perspective of endogenous growth. The findings suggest that there are stochastic and absolute beta-convergence tendencies, and human capital plays a role in enhancing environmental efficiency convergence. However, the impact of trade competitiveness on environmental efficiency convergence is mixed, depending on factors such as scale, composition, and technical effects.

Production efficiency and cost reduction potential of biodiesel fuel plants using waste cooking oil in Japan

Mari Ogata et al.

Summary: Biodiesel fuel (BDF) is a potentially carbon-neutral fuel with the potential to help prevent global warming, but its high production cost presents challenges. This study evaluated the production efficiencies of 35 BDF plants in Japan and estimated the potential cost reduction associated with improved efficiency. The analysis revealed that most plants have inefficient production, with two main types of inefficiencies. Improving production efficiency could lead to a significant reduction in production costs.

Spatial autocorrelation analysis of the environmental efficiency of coal-fired power plants in China

Tomoaki Nakaishi et al.

Summary: The study found that the overall environmental efficiency of coal-fired power plants in China improved, and the gap between coastal and inland areas was reduced; There is a positive spatial autocorrelation among the environmental efficiency levels of coal-fired power plants in China, with high-efficiency plants clustered in coastal areas and low-efficiency plants clustered in inland areas.

CO2 Reduction Potential from Efficiency Improvements in China's Coal-Fired Thermal Power Generation: A Combined Approach of Metafrontier DEA and LMDI

Shogo Eguchi

Summary: China is the only G20 country that experienced an increase in coal-fired thermal power generation. This study finds that the inefficiency of power generation can be attributed to the location and production scale of power plants. The regional heterogeneity has a greater impact on the efficiency of small-medium power plants in the northeast region compared to large power plants in the western region. However, when considering the mass-based CO2 reduction potential, the positive effects in the western region for large power plants are 6.2 times larger than that in the northeast region for small-medium power plants. Therefore, an analysis focusing only on efficiency score would overlook the production scale and fail to properly evaluate the environmental impacts associated with efficiency changes.

Sources of inefficient power generation by coal-fired thermal power plants in China: A metafrontier DEA decomposition approach

Shogo Eguchi et al.

Summary: This study examines the efficiency changes and sources of inefficiency in coal-fired thermal power plants in China, finding that large-scale power plants have higher efficiency compared to small-scale ones. Operational inefficiency is the main source of inefficiency in eastern and central China, while the technology gap and equipment differences are the main sources in western China.

Location-specific co-benefits of carbon emissions reduction from coal-fired power plants in China

Pu Wang et al.

Summary: Spatially nuanced policies are crucial for maximizing co-benefits of carbon-emissions reduction, as shown in a study focusing on coal-fired power plants. A cost-integrating approach for CO2 and air pollution emissions was presented to better understand the social costs of coal burning in China. Climate policies achieving air quality co-benefits can align developing countries' interests with global climate mitigation.

Health co-benefits of climate change mitigation depend on strategic power plant retirements and pollution controls

Dan Tong et al.

Summary: Reducing CO2 emissions from fossil fuel- and biomass-fired power plants not only benefits climate and public health, but also has significant implications for future deaths, especially in low-income or emerging economies. Strategic retirements of super-polluting power plants and deployment of pollution control technologies are necessary to minimize future deaths and should be an important consideration in designing and implementing climate-energy policies.

Determinants of technical inefficiency in China's coal-fired power plants and policy recommendations for CO2 mitigation

Tomoaki Nakaishi et al.

Summary: This study found that Chinese coal-fired power plants have significant potential to reduce coal consumption and mitigate CO2 emissions through technological improvement. The study suggests the Chinese government create a power distribution structure that generates electricity using technologically efficient equipment in areas rich in coal resources and distributes the generated electricity to other areas of the country.

Environmental efficiency analysis of China's coal-fired power plants considering heterogeneity in power generation company groups

Tomoaki Nakaishi et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the environmental efficiency of 104 coal-fired power plants in China by considering multiple undesirable outputs and heterogeneity among power generation companies. The results showed that inefficient PM2.5 and SO2 emissions were the main sources of environmental inefficiency for many plants. Furthermore, it was found that managerial gaps within the same power generation company accounted for a larger proportion of total environmental inefficiency in most cases.

Developing effective CO2 and SO2 mitigation strategy based on marginal abatement costs of coal-fired power plants in China

Tomoaki Nakaishi

Summary: This study introduces a novel analysis framework for investigating the emission efficiency, reduction potential, and cost of CO2 and SO2 emissions from coal-fired power plants in China. The results show that there is a significant potential for reducing emissions, but at a high cost. The optimization of reduction efforts through linear programming provides effective mitigation strategies.
