Religious and secular collective gatherings, perceived emotional synchrony and self-transcendent emotions: two longitudinal studies

Anna Wlodarczyk et al.

Summary: Two studies examined the positive effects of participation in positive collective religious and secular activities, finding that collective emotional gatherings strengthen social cohesion and enhance self-esteem, positive affect, and positive shared beliefs. The studies also found that perceived emotional synchrony is associated with experiencing self-transcendent and enjoyment emotions. These findings support a neo-Durkheimian model of ritual and highlight the importance of perceived emotional synchrony for well-being.

Towards a Taxonomy of Collective Emotions

Gerhard Thonhauser

Summary: This paper distinguishes collective emotions from other phenomena related to the social and interactive nature of emotion and provides a taxonomy of different types of collective emotion. It emphasizes the difference between collective emotions as affective experiences and their underlying mechanisms, and elaborates on other types of affective experiences such as social sharing of emotion, group-based emotions, and joint emotions. The paper proposes a working definition of collective emotion based on a minimal threshold and four structural features, and develops a taxonomy of five types of collective emotion: emotional sharing, emotional contagion, emotional matching, emotional segregation, and emotional fusion.

Moved by Social Justice: The Role of Kama Muta in Collective Action Toward Racial Equality

Diana M. Lizarazo Pereira et al.

Summary: Participation in collective action is influenced by two appraisals of the social situation: perceptions of injustice and beliefs in collective efficacy. Anger mediates the relationship between injustice appraisals and collective action, while the emotion of being moved mediates the relationship between efficacy appraisals and collective action. This study further explores the relationship between efficacy appraisals and collective action using kama muta theory, and found that the emotion of being moved towards a movement mediates the relationship between collective efficacy and collective action intentions.
