Constructional associations trump lexical associations in processing valency coercion

Lucia Busso et al.

Summary: The paper investigates the interplay between lexical and constructional meaning in valency coercion processing, as well as the impact of (in)compatibility between verb and construction on successful resolution. The results show that both lexical and constructional semantics are important for valency coercion processing, and compatibility plays a role in coercion resolution. Additionally, there is evidence of constructional priming being primary, with a secondary priming effect for lexical associate verbs, suggesting a contribution of lexical semantics in coercion resolution.
