Metabolic and Molecular Mechanisms of Diet and Physical Exercise in the Management of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

Giorgia Scarfo et al.

Summary: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine systemic disorder characterized by hormonal and metabolic imbalances, leading to ovulation disorders, increased androgen levels, and the formation of ovarian cysts. The molecular mechanisms and signaling pathways underlying the pathogenesis of PCOS are still not well understood. Recent research has suggested that epigenetic modifications, influenced by factors like age, environment, lifestyle, and disease state, can alter the clinical presentation of PCOS. Genetic variants in genes involved in steroid synthesis and glucose homeostasis play a crucial role in PCOS development. Epigenetic control may also affect inflammation- and cell proliferation-related genes. Lifestyle factors, such as diet and physical activity, are important in reducing oxidative stress, inflammation, and improving metabolic and hormonal parameters in PCOS management.

What Does the Brain Have to Keep Working at Its Best? Resilience Mechanisms Such as Antioxidants and Brain/Cognitive Reserve for Counteracting Alzheimer's Disease Degeneration

Davide Maria Cammisuli et al.

Summary: Alzheimer's disease is a major challenge in terms of social and medical costs. Neuroprotective effects and antioxidants play a crucial role in countering cognitive deterioration in elderly individuals. Higher cognitive reserve reduces the impact of disease-related brain changes on cognition. Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) could be a potential target for intervention, where antioxidants can contribute to delaying cognitive decline and crossing the threshold for clinical dementia at a later stage.

Exploring the Role of Lipid-Binding Proteins and Oxidative Stress in Neurodegenerative Disorders: A Focus on the Neuroprotective Effects of Nutraceutical Supplementation and Physical Exercise

Giorgia Scarfo et al.

Summary: The human brain consists mainly of lipids, and dysfunctions in lipid-binding proteins can disrupt normal neuronal functions and increase the risk of neurodegenerative diseases. Nutraceutical supplementation and regular physical activity have been shown to improve cognitive functions and protect against neurodegeneration.

Effects of physical exercise on executive function in cognitively healthy older adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials Physical exercise for executive function

Jian Xiong et al.

Summary: Physical exercise interventions have a positive effect on working memory, cognitive flexibility, and inhibitory control in cognitively healthy adults aged 60 and above. Aerobic exercise lasting over 13 weeks, mind-body exercise, and interventions lasting over 26 weeks show significant improvements in executive function.

Morning fatigue and structured exercise interact to affect non-exercise physical activity of fit and healthy older adults

Tomas Vetrovsky et al.

Summary: Morning fatigue in older adults is associated with lower volume and intensity of daily physical activity, while attending exercise sessions leads to a decrease in non-exercise physical activity later that day. However, this compensation does not carry over into the next day.

A scoping review of physical activity interventions for older adults

Jennifer Taylor et al.

Summary: The scoping review investigated the evidence on physical activity interventions among adults aged 60+, identifying gaps in existing research and the need for further studies to explore interventions designed to increase physical activity in older adults. While there is a growing volume of evidence for certain interventions, there are still areas lacking coverage and requiring more comprehensive reviews and research.

Age-Related Changes in Hemispherical Specialization for Attentional Networks

Maria Casagrande et al.

Summary: Cognitive functions decline in healthy elderly individuals, with attention and executive functions being affected by aging. The study found that adults show a hemispheric lateralized pattern, with an age-related generalized slowness observed. The results support the hypothesis of reduced hemispheric asymmetry in elderly individuals.
