Summary: Research on artificial allomelanin analogues reveals high intrinsic microporosity and high BET surface area achievable through a simplified method. These synthetic allomelanin particles exhibit functions such as adsorbing ammonia and nerve agent simulants, as well as preventing agent breakthrough on breathable fabrics. Compared to naturally derived fungal melanin, synthetic analogues have higher porosity.

Metal-Fungus interaction: Review on cellular processes underlying heavy metal detoxification and synthesis of metal nanoparticles

Eepsita Priyadarshini et al.

Summary: The adverse outcome of industrialization is the contamination of the ecosystem with toxic heavy metals. These metals negatively affect microbial systems, but microbes have developed resistance mechanisms such as biosorption, bioaccumulation, biotransformation, and efflux of metal ions. Fungal cells respond to metal exposure by forming metal nanoparticles, which can immobilize metals in less toxic forms. Understanding how fungi resist metal toxicity can lead to the development of techniques for detoxification and removal of metals from the environment.

Utilization of extracellular fungal melanin as an eco-friendly biosorbent for treatment of metal-contaminated effluents

Jeong-Joo Oh et al.

Summary: Fungal melanins exhibit promising biosorption properties for metal-contaminated effluents treatment. Melanin pigment derived from Amorphotheca resinae showed high adsorption capacities for Cu(II), Pb(II), Cd(II), and Zn(II) in aqueous solutions, with an affinity sequence of Cu(II)>Pb(II)>Cd(II)>Zn(II). The chelating ability of free radicals in the pigment contributes to its efficient adsorption, making it a suitable biosorbent for metal-contaminated wastewater treatment.
