Grain boundary engineering during the laser powder bed fusion of TiC/316L stainless steel composites: New mechanism for forming TiC-induced special grain boundaries

Jing Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel machining solution for controlling microstructures in composites during laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) was proposed. The mechanism of special grain boundary and nanotwin formation in TiC/316L stainless steel composite was investigated. By optimizing the process parameters, including laser power, scanning speed, and hatch spacing, the residual stress and grain refinement in the TiC/316LSS composite were successfully achieved.

Evading strength and ductility trade-off in an inverse nacre structured magnesium matrix nanocomposite

Xi Luo et al.

Summary: The study proposes an innovative strategy called inverse nacre structure, which embeds elongated and curled soft constituents in a matrix of hard constituent to create an ordered brick-and-mortar arrangement. This strategy has been applied in a particle reinforced metal matrix composite, resulting in a nanocomposite with high strength and especially high tensile elongation. The tailored inverse nacre structure contributes to a stable microcrack-multiplication process, promoting strain hardening and maintaining the post-ultimate tensile strength. This strategy is not limited to specific materials and offers a generic pathway for developing high-performance materials for engineering applications.

Grade-4 commercially pure titanium with ultrahigh strength achieved by twinning-induced grain refinement through cryogenic deformation

Seong-Woo Choi et al.

Summary: Cryogenic-temperature rolling (CTR) significantly increases the yield strength of commercially pure titanium, demonstrating twinning-induced grain refinement and dislocation accumulation as the main mechanisms for strengthening. This method provides a way to achieve ultrahigh-strength CP titanium for structural applications requiring high-strength materials.

Enhanced strength in pure Ti via design of alternating coarse- and fine-grain layers

Danyang Li et al.

Summary: A specially designed layered titanium with alternating coarse- and fine-grain layers (C/F-Ti) shows an extraordinarily high yield strength beyond predicted values, with the strengthening mechanism investigated through experimental characterizations. The enhanced interface constraint effect on deformation mechanism in hexagonal close-packed (hcp) materials is highlighted, demonstrating a new structural design strategy for property optimization.

Characterizing the microstructural effect of build direction during solidification of laser-powder b e d fusion of Al-Si alloys in the dilute limit: A phase-field study

Hossein Azizi et al.

Summary: Experiments using the LPBF method show that altering the build direction can induce morphological transitions in the solidification microstructure, leading to changes in final texture and material properties. Numerical investigations on dilute Al-Si alloy produced by LPBF reveal that horizontal printing results in higher nucleation rate and equiaxed to columnar microstructure ratio.

Cryoforged nanotwinned titanium with ultrahigh strength and ductility

Shiteng Zhao et al.

Summary: Nanostructured metals are usually strong due to high internal boundary density, limiting dislocation mean free path, but also more brittle. Nanotwinned materials can overcome this trade-off. A new nanostructuring method enhances the strength and ductility of titanium.
