Oogonial proliferation and early oocyte dynamics during the reproductive cycle of two Clupeiform fish species

Katerina Charitonidou et al.

Summary: This study examined the dynamics of early oogenesis in two Clupeiform fishes, the Mediterranean sardine and the European anchovy, and found differences in oogonial proliferation and meiotic activity, which may be attributed to seasonal patterns of energy allocation to reproduction and the synchronization between feeding and the spawning season.

Balbiani body formation and cytoplasmic zonation during early oocyte development in two Clupeiform fishes

Katerina Charitonidou et al.

Summary: In this study, the Balbiani body (Bb) in primary growth phase oocytes of two fish species, Sardina pilchardus and Engraulis encrasicolus, were examined for the first time. The ultrastructural observations revealed a distinct spherical Bb in both species, with differences in the cytoplasm. After the disassembly of the Bb, a prominent cytoplasmic zonation developed in the secondary growth oocytes of both species, although with different organelle distribution. These cytoplasmic characteristics can be observed in histological sections and can serve as indicators of maturity or imminent spawning period, providing a valuable tool for applied fisheries biology.

Linking the dynamic organization of the ovary with spawning dynamics in pelagic fishes

Katerina Charitonidou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the connection between the dynamic organization of the ovary and spawning dynamics in pelagic fishes. Various laboratory methods and statistical approaches were applied to gonadal samples from three commercial fish species in the NE Atlantic. The study found that attributes of ovarian dynamics, such as oocyte size frequency distribution and the number of oocyte cohorts, were related to spawning interval and oocyte growth rate. The study also showed that indeterminate spawners can exhibit different proportions of oocytes based on the seasonal pattern of oocyte recruitment. These findings suggest that determinacy and indeterminacy should be viewed as endpoints on a continuum controlled by the overlap between oocyte recruitment and spawning period. The study's findings have important implications for biomass assessments of commercial fish stocks.

First thorough assessment of de novo oocyte recruitment in a teleost serial spawner, the Northeast Atlantic mackerel (Scomber scombrus) case

Thassya C. dos Santos Schmidt et al.

Summary: Using advanced laboratory methods, it was unequivocally confirmed that mackerel are true indeterminate spawners with de novo oocyte recruitment during spawning. The fecundity counts should use a lower threshold of around 230 μm for PVO4c oocytes to avoid overestimation of relative fecundity and underestimated spawning stock biomass.

Changes in Life History Traits of Small Pelagic Fish in the Western Mediterranean Sea

Marta Albo-Puigserver et al.

Summary: Small pelagic fish populations in the western Mediterranean Sea have experienced significant declines in biomass, particularly in the northern area. Environmental conditions partially explain the long-term changes in life history traits, with selected variables differing between areas, highlighting the importance of regional oceanographic conditions in understanding the dynamics of small pelagic fish.

Summary: Golani's round herring, Etrumeus golanii, has a well-established local population in the western Mediterranean and exhibits a protracted breeding period from winter to early summer. Its reproduction is closely related to the seasonal cycle of planktonic production.
