Long-term body tactile stimulation reduces aggression and improves productive performance in Nile tilapia groups

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of long-term body tactile stimulation (TS) on a group of Nile tilapia fish. The results showed that long-term TS can reduce fights, improve growth rate and feed efficiency, but does not reduce cortisol or androgen levels. This suggests that long-term TS can improve the welfare and productive performance of territorial fish.

Welfare Indicators in Tilapia: An Epidemiological Approach

Summary: Interest and concern about rearing methods and their impact on animal welfare have increased. A study was conducted to evaluate the feeding rate effect on the welfare indicators of Oreochromis niloticus using an epidemiological approach. The results showed that the feed rate directly affects the welfare indicators and production. Mortality, weight reduction, body condition reduction, and caudal and anal fin damage were found to be relevant indicators in all O. niloticus growing stages.

Recommendations for stocking density for different aquaculture species vary greatly. Both too low and too high stocking densities can have negative impacts on welfare and production. It is reasonable to select appropriate stocking density through welfare assessment and good management practices.
