Extensive mitogenomic heteroplasmy and its implications in the phylogeny of the fish genus Megalobrama

Kai Liu et al.

Summary: This study identified new variations in mitogenomic heteroplasmy of Megalobrama fish by removing nuclear mitochondrial DNA fragments. The phylogenetic tree of Megalobrama fish genus was reconstructed using the RY coding method, but the intersection of MP and MT positions in the tree remained unchanged. The findings of this study provide new insights into mtDNA-based phylogenetic studies.

Comparative mitochondrial genomics of tetras: insights into phylogenetic relationships in Characidae

Wei Xu et al.

Summary: Classical morphological classification within the Characidae has faced challenges when using mitochondrial genes to investigate phylogeny. The mitochondrial genome analysis of six Characidae species reveals potential problems with the current taxonomic system. The biased base composition and inconclusive Bayesian analysis suggest the need for further study on the phylogeny of the Characidae family.

mtDNA Heteroplasmy: Origin, Detection, Significance, and Evolutionary Consequences

Maria-Eleni Parakatselaki et al.

Summary: Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is predominantly uniparentally transmitted, leading to homoplasmy in organisms. However, heteroplasmy, with two or more mtDNA haplotypes, has been observed in low frequency. Recent advancements in sequencing techniques have improved the detection and quantification of heteroplasmy, shedding light on its evolutionary consequences and potential inheritance patterns.

Mitochondrial Genome Structures and Phylogenetic Analyses of Two Tropical Characidae Fishes

Cheng-He Sun et al.

Summary: The Characidae family is the largest family of tropical fish species, with morphological similarities making species identification challenging. By determining and comparatively analyzing the complete mitogenomes of two Characidae fish species, the study provides a phylogenetic basis for improved classification of the family. The findings enhance our understanding of the phylogeny and evolution of fish species within the Characidae family.

Comparative mitogenomes of three species in Moenkhausia: Rare irregular gene rearrangement within Characidae

Wei Xu et al.

Summary: A new type of mitochondrial gene arrangement was identified in Moenkhausia, with three new complete mitogenomes sequenced. These mitogenomes exhibited differences in gene order and organization compared to typical teleostean mitogenomes, providing insight into the features of Characidae mitogenomes for further phylogenetic studies. BI and ML analyses classified M. costae and M. pittieri together, with M. sanctaefilomenae slightly farther from other fish in the same genus.

Mitochondrial genomes of five Hyphessobrycon tetras and their phylogenetic implications

Wei Xu et al.

Summary: The study focused on determining the mitochondrial genomes of five Hyphessobrycon species, revealing similarities in genetic structure and evolutionary selection pathways within the genus. Purifying selection was observed in certain protein-coding genes, and differences in repeat unit length and copy number across species led to variations in mitochondrial genome sizes. Phylogenetic analysis based on protein-coding genes did not support taxonomic relationships, indicating potential mixing of Hyphessobrycon species with those from other genera.
