Vitamin C elicits the activation of immunological responses in swimming crab (Portunus trituberculatus) hemocytes against Mesanophrys sp.

Summia Perveen et al.

Summary: The study found that supplementing cell culture media with Vitamin C significantly enhanced immunological responses and anti-parasitic actions in crab hemocytes. Intracellular O-2(-) levels peaked at 118.91 mu g mL(-1) of the cell culture media. Overall, Vitamin C supplementation modulated the innate immune response and improved survival rates of hemocytes, indicating its potential as an immunostimulant.

Emerging Diseases and Epizootics in Crabs Under Cultivation

Christopher J. Coates et al.

Summary: While most crab production for human consumption is from capture fisheries, there is an increasing trend in aquaculture-based production of selected species. However, diseases and suitable feeds remain major challenges for sustainable development of crab cultivation methods.

Host-parasite interactions: A study on the pathogenicity of Mesanophrys sp. and hemocytes-mediated parasitic resistance of swimming crabs (Portunus trituberculatus) at different temperatures

Yuhua Lei et al.

Summary: Mesanophrys sp. is a parasite that infects swimming crabs and reproduces rapidly. The results showed that infection caused a decrease in crab hemocytes and increased lysis. Lowering the temperature decreased the resistance of crab hemocytes to Mesanophrys sp. and increased its impact.

Black Gill in Marine Decapod Crustaceans: A Review

Marc E. Frischer et al.

Summary: Black gill, a response to irritants or pathogens, is commonly caused by fungal or ciliate infections in crustaceans. There is a lack of knowledge regarding the occurrence, causative agents, and impacts of black gill, necessitating further research on surveillance, host interactions, and the relationship with climate.

Biochemical, metabolic, and immune responses of mud crab (Scylla paramamosain) after mud crab reovirus infection

ChangHong Cheng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the physiological, transcriptomic, and metabolomic responses after MCRV infection. The results showed that MCRV infection caused changes in enzyme activities, oxidative stress, and tissue damage. Transcriptome analysis identified genes related to detoxification, immune response, and metabolic processes. Two key pathways, phagocytosis and apoptosis, played important roles in response to MCRV infection.

Are antioxidant enzymes essential markers in the diagnosis and monitoring of cancer patients-A review

Elzbieta Cecerska-Heryc et al.

Summary: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are significant in human cells, with antioxidant enzymes playing a crucial role in maintaining balance and diagnosing neoplastic diseases. Lowered activity of SOD, CAT, and GPx is characteristic of various cancers, making SOD, CAT, and XOR promising prognostic markers in lung, bladder, ovarian, and colon cancer.

Effect of environmental factors on survival and population growth of ciliated parasite, Mesanophrys sp. (Ciliophora: Scuticociliatia) infecting Portunus trituberculatus

Summia Perveen et al.

Summary: The newly identified parasitic ciliate Mesanophrys sp. showed highest survival, growth rate, and population density at lower temperatures and at a salinity level of 20 ppt. A pH of 8.0 was found to be optimal for parasite survival, while a pH of 9.5 inhibited its survival. The introduction of dynamic parasite culture systems with optimized dilution timing enabled continuous culture of parasites with higher population density and exponential growth rate.
