Bulk Oxygen Stabilization via Electrode-Electrolyte Interphase Tailored Surface Activities of Li-Rich Cathodes

Xu Zhang et al.

Summary: This study successfully improves the capacity retention and suppresses voltage decay of Li-rich layered oxides by regulating the surface of the material. The enhanced performance is attributed to the thin, uniform, robust, and compact cathode-electrolyte interphase (CEI) which suppresses surface degradation and stabilizes bulk oxygen reactions.

Constructing LiF/Li2CO3-rich heterostructured electrode electrolyte interphases by electrolyte additive for 4.5 V well-cycled lithium metal batteries

Xinhong Hu et al.

Summary: The stability of Li||LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) batteries under high voltage was improved by adding pentafluorostyrene (PFBE) to the electrolyte. PFBE facilitated the formation of LiF/Li2CO3-rich interphases on the cathode and anode surfaces, which effectively mitigated irreversible phase transition, stress-induced microcracks, and transition metal dissolution. It also controlled the growth of Li dendrites on the anode surface. The 4.5 V Li||NCM811 batteries showed a capacity retention rate of 61.27% after 600 cycles at 0.5 C, and the -6.69 Ah Li||NCM811 pouch cells with the electrolyte achieved a stable energy density of -485 Wh kg-1.

Tailoring solvation chemistry in carbonate electrolytes for all-climate, high-voltage lithium-rich batteries

Zheng Lu et al.

Summary: High-voltage Li-rich layered oxide materials have high energy density and low cost, but their electrochemical performance deteriorates under high voltages due to detrimental reactions with free anions, unstable electrode interface, and limited Li+ kinetic process. A highly oxidation-resistant carbonate electrolyte incorporating LiDFOB and TMSPi additives is demonstrated to manipulate the solvation structure, promoting the desolvation process of Li+ and suppressing harmful species generation. The Li||LLO cells with dual additives exhibit excellent cycle stability and improved rate capability in a wide temperature range, indicating a promising strategy for long-cycle stability of layered cathode materials under high voltage and wide-temperature conditions.

Regulating f orbital of Tb electronic reservoir to activate stepwise and dual-directional sulfur conversion reaction

Shuang Yu et al.

Summary: The sluggish kinetics in multistep sulfur redox reaction with different energy requirements for each step is considered as the crucial handicap of lithium-sulfur batteries. In this study, a single Tb3+/4+ oxide is synthesized as an electron reservoir to optimize polysulfide adsorption, reduce activation energy barrier, expedite electron/Li+ transport, and selectively catalyze both long-chain and short-chain polysulfide conversions. The result shows that the Tb electron reservoir enables stable operation of low-capacity decay, high sulfur loading, and electrolyte-starved Li-S batteries.

Sifting weakly-coordinated solvents within solvation sheath through an electrolyte filter for high-voltage lithium-metal batteries

Xingyu Zhu et al.

Summary: The use of a metal-organic framework (MOF) as a unique electrolyte solvation sheath filter has successfully isolated free or weakly-coordinated solvents from contact with electrodes, creating a special electrolyte composed of only strongly-coordinated solvent molecules. This special electrolyte filtering strategy has greatly expanded the electrochemical stability windows and improved the performance of high-voltage lithium-metal batteries, paving the way for the development of high-energy-density LMBs.

Double interface regulation: Toward highly stable lithium metal anode with high utilization

Guanyao Wang et al.

Summary: Regulating the double interfaces adjacent to the metallic Li anode effectively prevents dendritic Li growth, significantly improving the cycling performance of LMAs. The synergy between the LiF-rich upper interface formed by 1M LiFSI in DME and the lithiophilic lower interface on the current collector plays a key role in enhancing the cyclability of LMAs. This approach allows stable plating/stripping cycles with high Coulombic efficiency and withstands high current densities, demonstrating an effective pathway to stabilize LMAs.
