Characteristics of pantograph-catenary arc under low air pressure and strong airflow

Zhilei Xu et al.

Summary: Pantograph-catenary arc motion characteristics are significantly different under low air pressure and strong airflow, with different traction mechanisms at different stages of arc development. Arc duration is longer and electrode ablation more serious under low air pressure, while airflow velocity increase results in greater arc column drift speed and height. Irregular arc motion phenomena like arc root jumping and arc reignition are observed, and a magnetohydrodynamics model is used to study the influence of arc temperature and voltage, providing theoretical support for arc protection in high-altitude areas.

Evolution processes of the tribological properties in pantograph/catenary system affected by dynamic contact force during current-carrying sliding

Yanyan Zhang et al.

Summary: The dynamic study of the pantograph/catenary system on SS7 electric locomotive in China found that the contact force between pantograph and contact wire vibrated periodically with running trains, and increased in amplitude and frequency with higher running speeds. The effects of dynamic contact force on tribological properties of the pure carbon strip were studied, revealing a critical point of friction coefficient, wear rate, and current-carrying quality at a velocity of 80 km/h. The study also showed that the wear mechanism transferred from mechanical wear to arc erosion with the increase of arcing rate, which proved to be the most important failure types for pure carbon strip.

A comparative study on pantograph-catenary models and effect of parameters on pantograph-catenary dynamics under crosswind

Haijian Shi et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the pantograph-catenary model under crosswind and parameter influences on dynamics. It is found that friction and zigzag value significantly impact contact force and contact loss rate. Additionally, a critical cycle length is found to exist in the interaction between pantograph and catenary.

An Investigation on the Current Collection Quality of Railway Pantograph-Catenary Systems With Contact Wire Wear Degradations

Yang Song et al.

Summary: This article presents a stochastic analysis of the pantograph-catenary interaction performance with different levels of contact wire wear (CWW) based on four years of measurement data. The results indicate that CWW mainly affects the maximum and minimum contact forces, rather than the contact force standard deviation. The optimal pantograph-catenary interaction performance is observed certain years after CWW formation, but decreases with an increase in service time.
