Metabolites Reprogramming and Na+/K+ Transportation Associated With Putrescine-Regulated White Clover Seed Germination and Seedling Tolerance to Salt Toxicity

Bizhen Cheng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of seed soaking with Putrescine (Put) on white clover seed germination under salt stress. The results showed that Put treatment alleviated salt-induced decreases in germination rate and promoted starch metabolism. Metabolomic analysis revealed that Put treatment increased the accumulation of various metabolites associated with osmotic adjustment, cell membrane stability, energy supply, and metabolic homeostasis. Additionally, Put treatment up-regulated the expression levels of specific genes involved in ion transportation and retention, resulting in a higher potassium/sodium ratio during seed germination. These findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the salt tolerance mechanism induced by Put during seed germination.

Influence of glutamate and GABA transport on brain excitatory/inhibitory balance

Sheila M. S. Sears et al.

Summary: An optimally functional brain requires a regulated and balanced combination of excitatory and inhibitory inputs. Imbalance in this interplay, as seen in various neurological disorders and developmental disorders, can lead to dysfunctional signaling and impaired cognitive or motor function. The neurotransmitters glutamate and GABA play a key role in controlling this balance at the cellular level.

Salinity Duration Differently Modulates Physiological Parameters and Metabolites Profile in Roots of Two Contrasting Barley Genotypes

Emilia Dell'Aversana et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the morphological, physiological and biochemical changes occurring at root level in H. maritimum and the salt sensitive cultivar H. vulgare L. cv. Lamsi under extended salt stress conditions. H. maritimum was able to compartmentalize higher amounts of sodium in the roots, avoiding transferring it to the shoot and impairing photosynthetic metabolism. This root-level strategy allowed the wild species to delay the onset of stress symptoms and enhance survival under transient soil salinity.
