Hairy Root Induction of Taxus baccata L. by Natural Transformation with Rhizobium rhizogenes

Junou He et al.

Summary: Currently, the production of the anticancer drug paclitaxel is limited due to the low accumulation levels in yew plants. However, the use of hairy root culture as a biotechnological tool could be a cost-effective and efficient way to produce paclitaxel, making it of great importance in the pharmaceutical industry.

Root Cultures, a Boon for the Production of Valuable Compounds: A Comparative Review

Masooma Jawad Hussain et al.

Summary: Medicinal plants are crucial for pharmaceutical drugs, but their existence is threatened by overexploitation. Adventitious root and hairy root culture systems provide an alternative method for producing valuable compounds efficiently. This review summarizes the recent global research on these methods and compares their effectiveness. Factors such as culture conditions and inducer concentrations are also discussed.

Assessing the Ecosystem Services Potential of Endemic Floras: A Systematic Review on the Greek Endemics of Peloponnese

Alexian Cheminal et al.

Summary: This study examines the ecosystem services provided by endemic plants in Greece and identifies six main categories: medical, aromatic, folk medicine, antimicrobial, environmental, and craftsmanship interests. The literature documents the provision of ecosystem services by 24.7% of the endemic taxa, with Lamiaceae, Asteraceae, and Boraginaceae as the families with the highest numbers of documented taxa. Spatial hotspots with a high density of taxa providing ecosystem services are mapped, and knowledge gaps on the ecosystem services of endemic taxa are highlighted.

Protocol for In Vitro Propagation of Salix acmophylla (Boiss.). Studies on Three Ecotypes

Maurizio Capuana et al.

Summary: We describe a micropropagation protocol for three ecotypes of S. acmophylla, which showed that the best results for shoot proliferation were obtained by culturing the shoot explants on Woody Plant Medium containing benzyladenine. Separating the shoot tip from the underlying internodes further enhanced proliferation.

In Vitro Propagation of the Mount Parnitha Endangered Species Sideritis raeseri subsp. Attica

Konstantinos Bertsouklis et al.

Summary: This study aims to establish an efficient micropropagation method for the conservation and restoration of the unique natural ecosystem and vulnerable population of Sideritis raeseri subsp. attica in Mount Parnitha. The in vitro germination study revealed a higher germination rate at 20.0℃ and 25.0℃. The addition of low concentrations of hormones in the culture media contributed to the establishment and multiplication of plantlets, but also resulted in hyperhydricity. Rooting occurred on the half-strength MS medium, and the survival rate and ex vitro acclimatization rate of the plants were 100.0%.

Encapsulation in Calcium Alginate of Nodes from Stolons of Mentha spicata L.

Maurizio Micheli et al.

Summary: This study used in vivo derived organs obtained from cultivated mother plants through excision to develop encapsulated plants, showing successful conversion into whole plantlets. The concentration of nutrients and added drugs in the artificial endosperm had an impact on the conversion rate.

A regeneration system using cotyledons and cotyledonary node explants ofToona ciliata

Huiyun Song et al.

Summary: This study established an efficient regeneration system for T. ciliata using cotyledons and cotyledonary nodes as explants. Different genotypes showed significantly different callus induction efficiency, with the optimal regeneration achieved with 20-day seedlings' cotyledons and cotyledonary nodes on MS medium containing specific concentrations of 6-BA, KT, and NAA. The optimal inoculation method for cotyledons and the most suitable differentiation medium for adventitious shoot production were also determined.

Extinction Risk Assessment of the Greek Endemic Flora

Konstantinos Kougioumoutzis et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the decline and rarity of all vascular endemic plant taxa in Greece for the first time, highlighting areas for conservation prioritization. Some Greek endemics are at risk of extinction, with fourteen taxa identified for priority conservation due to their evolutionary distinctiveness. The assessment serves as a baseline for future conservation efforts in Greece to prevent plant extinctions.

Overview of the Dynamic Role of Specialty Cut Flowers in the International Cut Flower Market

Anastasios Darras

Summary: The global cut flower industry continues to face challenges but remains an important sector, with floriculture businesses seeking new trends and niches to increase sales. Production of specialty cut flowers has increased in the past two decades, driven by their eco-friendly profile, contrasting with the high energy inputs of traditional cut flowers like roses and chrysanthemums. Positive influences on future specialty cut flower cultivation and sales are expected from environmental legislation, production costs, and customer demand for eco-friendly products.

Culture condition optimization and FT-IR analysis of Polygonum multiflorum Thunb. adventitious root cultures grown in an air-lift bioreactor system

Thanh-Tam Ho et al.

Summary: The study found that the optimal condition for Polygonum multiflorum bioreactor culture is full-strength MS medium supplemented with 2 mg/L IBA and 5% sucrose. Low MS salt strength increased total phenolics and flavonoids accumulation but reduced biomass accumulation. Bioreactor cultures play a crucial role in biomass production and bioactive compounds accumulation in medicinal plant adventitious root cultures.
