Early treatment with dexamethasone intravitreal implants in diabetic macular edema: Naive versus refractory patients

Summary: In this study, dexamethasone 0.7 mg implants (DEX-I) were found to improve visual acuity and reduce macular edema mainly in treatment-naive patients with diabetic macular edema (DME). Treatment-refractory patients also showed significant reductions in central macular thickness (CMT) after DEX-I injections, but no changes were observed in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA). These findings suggest that DEX-I may be a promising first-line treatment option for DME.

Effect of dexamethasone intravitreal implant for refractory and treatment-naive diabetic macular edema in Taiwanese patients

Summary: This study compared the efficacy and safety of Dexamethasone implant between treatment-naive and refractory Asian patients with diabetic macular edema. The results showed that DEX implant effectively treated both refractory and treatment-naive patients with DME, with superior visual outcomes observed in the treatment-naive group. The study also found that there were no serious ocular complications, and elevated intraocular pressures were manageable with topical medications in a quarter of the patients.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the incidence, risk factors, and time to onset of ocular hypertension (OHT) after intravitreal injections (IVI) of dexamethasone implant. It found that factors such as young age, male sex, uveitis and retinal vein occlusion, and glaucoma treated with a multiple combination of topical pressure-lowering medications were associated with a higher risk of OHT. Additionally, there was no cumulative effect on the incidence of OHT after repeated injections of dexamethasone implant.
