Learning Methods and Predictive Modeling to Identify Failure by Human Factors in the Aviation Industry

Rui P. R. Nogueira et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a model that can predict fatal occurrences in aviation events by using human factors and flight information as inputs. The model database is provided by the Aviation Safety Network (ASN). A classification model system, utilizing the Human Factors Analysis Classification System (HFACS), is proposed and the database is preprocessed for machine learning techniques. Two supervised learning algorithms, Random Forest (RF) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), as well as the semi-supervised Active Learning (AL), are considered and optimized to improve the model's performance. The best predictive model, achieved with RF, exhibits an accuracy of 90%, macro F1 of 87%, and a recall of 86%, outperforming the ANN models. These findings are expected to assist decision makers in preventing aviation incidents caused by human factors.

An incremental clustering method for anomaly detection in flight data

Weizun Zhao et al.

Summary: This study proposes an incremental anomaly detection method based on Gaussian Mixture Model for identifying common patterns and detecting outliers in flight operations from digital flight data. Compared to traditional offline GMM methods, this approach showed significant improvements in processing time and memory usage, indicating that the incremental learning scheme is effective in dealing with dynamically growing data in flight data analytics.

Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing for Prediction of Human Factors in Aviation Incident Reports

Tomas Madeira et al.

Summary: This study proposed a methodology to identify and classify human factor categories from aviation incident reports using text data, text pre-processing, and NLP techniques, while considering semi-supervised and supervised modeling techniques. The best predictive models demonstrated favorable performance based on the Micro F1 score, but it is recommended to use larger data sets in future research.
