Validation Study of Diabetes Definitions Using Japanese Diagnosis Procedure Combination Data Among Hospitalized Patients

Summary: We evaluated the validity of diabetes definitions using disease codes and antidiabetic drug prescriptions in the Japanese DPC data via medical chart review. The results showed that DPC data can accurately identify diabetes among inpatients using either diabetes codes alone or diabetes codes and/or prescriptions.

Comparison of laparoscopic and open inguinal hernia repair in adults: A retrospective cohort study using a medical claims database

Summary: This study compared the surgical complications between laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair (LIHR) and open inguinal hernia repair (OIHR). The analysis showed that LIHR had lower risks of surgical site infection and acute and chronic postoperative pain compared to OIHR. There were no significant differences in recurrence rate and length of hospital stay between the two procedures.

Summary: By comparing the surgical outcomes of MIE and OE for esophageal cancer, it was found that MIE had lower incidences of in-hospital mortality, morbidities, such as surgical site infection and anastomotic leakage, and a shorter postoperative length of stay; however, it also had higher incidences of vocal cord dysfunction and prolonged intubation period after esophagectomy.

Summary: Postoperative complications have a negative impact on the long-term survival outcomes of patients with cT3/4a gastric cancer. Any complications of C-D grade III or higher seem to be the most suitable definition for predicting negative long-term survival outcomes.

Postoperative intensive care unit stay after minimally invasive esophagectomy shows large hospital variation. Results from the Dutch Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer Audit

Summary: This study investigated the hospital variation in postoperative length of ICU stay after MIE in Dutch hospitals, finding significant differences among hospitals. Short ICU stay was associated with shorter overall hospital admission and did not negatively impact short-term surgical outcomes. Therefore, a more selective use of ICU resources could lead to a significant national cost reduction.

Validity of initial cancer diagnoses in the Diagnosis Procedure Combination data in Japan

Summary: This study compared the validity of cancer diagnoses in Japan's nationwide administrative hospital discharge database (DPC data) with hospital-based cancer registries in Osaka Prefecture. Results showed high concordance and positive predictive values of cancer diagnosis in the DPC data, but some specific types of cancer had low concordance in cancer stage, which may impact the results.
