Molecular detection and characterization of tick-borne hemoparasites and Anaplasmataceae in dogs in major cities of Malawi

Elisha Chatanga et al.

Summary: The study revealed that at least 44.5% of dogs in Malawi were infected with tick-borne pathogens, including genera Babesia, Hepatozoon, Anaplasma, and Ehrlichia; education and awareness raising are needed for veterinary practitioners, dog handlers, and pet owners to protect animal health; further research focusing on rural areas is necessary to determine the extent of tick-borne pathogen infection in dogs.

Genetic diversity of Anaplasma bacteria: Twenty years later

Vera Rar et al.

Summary: The genus Anaplasma includes obligate intracellular alphaproteobacteria that are transmitted by ticks to vertebrate hosts. With eight confirmed species and numerous unclassified genovariants, Anaplasma spp. can infect humans and a wide range of domestic animals, showing a high genetic variability. Further studies on genetic diversity have identified potential new candidate species within the genus.

Molecular detection and characterization of Anaplasma platys and Ehrlichia canis in dogs from the Caribbean

Andy Alhassan et al.

Summary: This study describes infections in dogs with Anaplasma platys and Ehrlichia canis on the Caribbean island of Grenada, detected using molecular methods. The research reveals a widespread distribution of these rickettsial pathogens in Caribbean dogs with no apparent clinical signs, posing a high risk for canine health and a lesser extent to humans, with genetic analysis showing some degree of geographic specificity.

Molecular prevalence, characterization and associated risk factors of Anaplasma spp. and Theileria spp. in small ruminants in Northern Pakistan

Sadaf Niaz et al.

Summary: This study conducted in four districts of Northern Pakistan found high prevalence of Theileria and Anaplasma species in small ruminants. Molecular analysis revealed the presence of T. ovis and at least two more Theileria species, with A. ovis having a higher infection rate than Anaplasma spp.
