Outcome and prognostic factors in infective endocarditis in dogs: 113 cases (2005-2020)

Summary: Elevation of cardiac troponin in patients with infective endocarditis is associated with poor prognosis, leading to higher in-hospital mortality, surgery rates, and more frequent complications such as central nervous system events and cardiac abscesses. Troponin determination may provide additional help in prognostic assessment of these patients.

Evaluation of serum cardiac troponin-I concentrations for diagnosis of infective endocarditis in dogs

Summary: In dogs with infective endocarditis (IE), serum concentrations of cardiac troponin-I (cTnI) are significantly elevated compared to those with preclinical myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) or immune-mediated disease (IMD). A cTnI cutoff of 0.625 ng/mL can accurately differentiate dogs with IE from those with similar clinical features, with 100% specificity and 52% sensitivity. However, there was no significant correlation between cTnI concentration and survival time in dogs with IE.

Summary: Infective endocarditis is a life-threatening infectious disease, where high-dose and long-term antibiotic therapy can improve outcomes, but microbial biofilm formation on affected heart valves can lead to persistent or recurrent cases of infection. Non-antibiotic, antimicrobial approaches targeting biofilm formation may offer potential novel strategies for the treatment of IE caused by Staphylococcus aureus.
