Perspectives in Prevention of Biofilm for Medical Applications

Julia Lison et al.

Summary: Reducing the development of biofilm on implant surfaces is a significant research problem, and various surface treatment techniques can minimize bacterial colonization and improve biocompatibility. The application of antibacterial metals can enhance resistance to biofilm adhesion. Traditional methods of preventing biofilm often lead to the development of antibiotic resistance.

Ag nanoparticle-decorated chitosan/SrSnO3 nanocomposite for ultrafast elimination of antibiotic linezolid and methylene blue

M. Faisal et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the design and development of ultrafast smart ternary photocatalysts containing SrSnO3 nanostructures, chitosan (CTSN), and silver (Ag) nanoparticles. The results demonstrate that the Ag@CTSN/SrSnO3 photocatalyst exhibits significantly improved efficiency in removing antibiotics and dyes compared to bare SrSnO3, providing a promising and effective solution for environmental pollution management.

Bio-mechanical characterization of a CAD/CAM PMMA resin for digital removable prostheses

Stefano Pagano et al.

Summary: This study compared the mechanical and biological features of PMMA CAD/CAM prostheses with traditional resin prostheses, showing that PMMA resins are suitable for removable prostheses due to their high elastic modulus and cell compatibility. Various analysis methods, such as DMA, Brillouin's micro-spectroscopy, SEM, MTT assay, and real-time PCR, were used to obtain relevant data.

The antimicrobial activity and biocompatibility of a controlled gentamicin-releasing single-layer sol-gel coating on hydroxyapatite-coated titanium

T. Nichol et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a controlled antibiotic release single-layer hybrid organic-inorganic sol-gel coating for cementless hydroxyapatite-coated titanium orthopaedic prostheses. Both laboratory and in vivo tests showed promising results in terms of antibiotic release kinetics, antibacterial activity, biocompatibility, physical bonding, and osseointegration. The sol-gel coating demonstrated rapid and effective antibiotic release, as well as successful eradication of bacterial biofilms and promotion of osteoblast differentiation in vitro and in vivo, suggesting its potential in preventing implant-related deep infection.

Characterization of Hybrid Materials Prepared by Sol-Gel Method for Biomedical Implementations. A Critical Review

Michelina Catauro et al.

Summary: The interaction between tissues and biomaterials aims to improve and replace anatomical parts of the human body, but early implant failure remains a challenge due to the lack of optimal mechanical and chemical characteristics and biocompatibility. Bioactive glasses are recognized as fine substances for repair and replacement, interacting with living bones through the formation of a hydroxyapatite layer. The composition and synthesis method of bioglasses significantly affect their biological properties, with the sol-gel technique being the preferred method for preparing materials for various biomedical implants and applications, including nanoparticle systems for cancer therapy.

Qiulian Yang et al.

Summary: This paper provides an overview of the presence of antibiotics in the environment, their toxicity to non-target organisms, and current treatment technologies. Studies have shown that antibiotics are most frequently detected in wastewater, exhibiting toxicity to aquatic organisms. Fluoroquinolones, tetracyclines, and sulfonamides are the most common antibiotics in the environment and can be removed through biotic or abiotic processes.
