Antimicrobial Combined Action of Graphene Oxide and Light Emitting Diodes for Chronic Wound Management

Silvia Di Lodovico et al.

Summary: Innovative non-antibiotic compounds like graphene oxide and light-emitting diodes (LEDs) can effectively enhance their antimicrobial activity against chronic wound infections caused by resistant pathogens. The combination of graphene oxide with 5-aminolevulinic acid-mediated photodynamic therapy (PDT) showed the best results in reducing bacterial load and increasing reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. This finding has significant implications for managing polymicrobial colonization in chronic wounds.

Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy in endodontic reintervention: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Larissa Pereira Nunes et al.

Summary: This systematic review evaluated the effectiveness of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) in root canal disinfection for endodontic retreatments. The meta-analysis showed significant reduction in microbial load after aPDT treatment. Overall, the studies had low risk of bias, and the evidence analysis was rated as moderate by GRADE assessment.

5-Aminolevulinic Acid and Red Led in Endodontics: A Narrative Review and Case Report

Simonetta D'Ercole et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to discuss the use of 5-aminolevulinic acid with red LED light in endodontic treatment. It is reported that the persistence of microorganisms is the main cause of endodontic treatment failure. Photodynamic therapy has become a promising antimicrobial strategy for endodontic treatment, as it is easy to apply, quick, and does not allow microbial resistance. Recent studies have shown that the combination of 5-aminolevulinic acid and red LED light has good results against various types of bacteria, including Enterococuss faecalis. A case report showed a significant decrease in bacterial count after irrigation with a gel containing 5% of 5-aminolevulinic acid and subsequent irradiation with red LED light. The use of 5-aminolevulinic acid with red LED light is therefore concluded to be effective in endodontic treatment.
