Inorganic Finishing for Textile Fabrics: Recent Advances in Wear-Resistant, UV Protection and Antimicrobial Treatments

Silvia Sfameni et al.

Summary: The demand for surface modification of textile fabrics to develop advanced materials with specific properties is increasing. Sol-gel technique has proven to be an innovative and convenient route for developing functional coatings to protect textile materials. Compared to conventional finishing processes, sol-gel technique offers advantages such as environmentally friendly one-step applications and low concentration of non-hazardous chemicals. This review focuses on recent developments in using sol-gel approach to synthesize inorganic nanoparticles and nanosols for improving wear and UV resistance, as well as providing antibacterial or antimicrobial effects in textile applications.

Super-Hydrophobicity of Polyester Fabrics Driven by Functional Sustainable Fluorine-Free Silane-Based Coatings

Silvia Sfameni et al.

Summary: Polyester fibers have wide applications due to their durability, strength, and flexibility. However, they have limitations in dyeability, coating adhesion, hydrophilicity, and wettability compared to natural fibers. In this work, a sustainable approach using non-fluorinated coatings was developed to improve the surface properties of polyester fabrics. The fabrics were treated with a water-based superhydrophobic finishing using (3-glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (GPTMS) and long alkyl-chain alkoxysilanes. The finished fabrics showed high water-based stain resistance and good hydrophobicity even after multiple cycles of abrasion.

Modeling the Properties of Curcumin Derivatives in Relation to the Architecture of the Siloxane Host Matrices

Florentina Monica Raduly et al.

Summary: This study investigated the hybrid materials obtained from modified silica structures with embedded curcumin dyes, and evaluated the influence of silica network structure on their optical properties and antimicrobial activity. The results showed that the hybrid materials exhibited good performance on glass support and polyethylene terephthalate films, and demonstrated inhibitory effects on certain fungi and bacteria. These findings are important for the development of curcumin derivatives for applications in optical films or bioactive coatings.

Optical Behavior of Curcuminoid Hybrid Systems as Coatings Deposited on Polyester Fibers

Florentina Monica Raduly et al.

Summary: The recent development of eco-friendly current has led researchers to focus on natural dyes that are biodegradable, anti-allergic, and have anti-UV, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties. This study aimed to create hybrid materials of dye-host matrix type using the sol-gel process. The nanocomposites obtained by embedding curcumin in siloxane matrices were deposited on polyester fabric and showed hydrophobic surface, fluorescent properties, and a high UV protection factor (UPF +50). The coated textile materials exhibited excellent resistance properties and maintained high UV protection factor even after washing or rubbing tests.

Marcin Gorski et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the antibacterial activity of curcumin against drug-resistant bacteria and explored its interactions with antibiotics. The results showed that curcumin had stronger antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria and exhibited synergistic effects with antibiotics in most cases. However, the combination of curcumin with antibiotics did not show satisfactory effects against some bacterial strains such as K. pneumoniae and P. aeruginosa.
